Just read about this only 10mins ago on PS3fanboy. Sounds good :)

2.36 was released today :)

Its only a stability update for older PS games though. Probably for PS1 games they may release on the PSN

Yep TOTO is correct. Its the Media Bar in your playstation that you run everything from. In-game will give the ability to do alot of things ingame like with the Xbox.

Thats one of the things that should be possible yes along with being able to access your friend list while in any game etc etc.

I don't think they've confirmed anything about that.

AFAIK, it's just gonna be in-game Friends List & messaging.

That would be a real shame. Surely its possible to do?

I'm sure I read about a year ago that it was going to come the summer.

Well, I think Sony's form of "coming soon" is different to what most people would actually consider "coming soon" ;)

Some PS3 games do themselves allow custom soundtracks. But, I read something a while ago which said that there were licensing/patent issues of some sort regarding a system-wide custom soundtrack capability. Then again, I've also read rumours that 2.40 is going to have "much more" than in-game XMB...

So... dunno. But I doubt it for now.

Still, the fact we're definitely getting "in-game XMB" is a great big step in the right direction from Sony :) - finally my PS3 will be able to do something my 360 could do from launch ;)... [allegedly Sony did actually consider giving the PS3 in-game XMB at the beginning, but pulled it for some reason. God knows why - stupid decision if true - but at least they're finally doing it now]

In-game XMB, with full access to the Friends List in all games, & the ability to send/receive messages & invites in all games, is something the PS3 really needs; and something that should make it a more worthy rival to XBL.

The thing is this is all do-able with the Xbox. I think sony would be unwise to leave the music feature out. Its not down to sony what music people play. My bet's still on it being made avalible. If not in 2.40 then not long after as its a big demand from the PS3 community.

According to Sony, the 'custom soundtrack' ability has always been available on PS3 - it's just something that the developers had to allow for in their code, rather than being built-in to the OS in the same way as the 360.

Personally, I've never seen any point/need for custom soundtracks. Even when I had my Xbox I never used them, nor do I in current PS3 games which allow it. A lot of money is spent on game soundtracks, so the least people can do is listen to them. Then if you don't like it, turn the music off.

Besides, I don't think Snake v Screaming Mantis would be quite as epic with the Spice Girls droning on in the background...

Still, at least it seems that they're finally including it for those that want it. The only thing I'm really looking forward to seeing is what this 'trophies' malarky is like. Custom soundtracks and in-game XMB I can happily live without!

ROFL !.

I can see your point however having a custom soundtrack for playing online games can sometimes be fun. I rarley use other music ingame to but I know its been one of the big cry's from the PS3 community.

Custom soundtracks has been available for a while, Super Stardust has the ability, and is awesome with a good trance CD!

Also if true then it looks like we may be getting the ability for playing own music ingame Matt.

As previously reported the update will also allow you to play back your own tunes in-game from the XMB Music column. It's unclear whether this feature will be compatible with all games or just new titles created with more recent development tools.

The system BGM will offer functions such as Play, Stop, Previous track, Next track, Change repeat mode, Change shuffle mode, Change volume (five levels). When you stop the playback of your tunes, playback of the game music will then begin

Well looks like alot fo the stuff meantioned for 2.40 is going to be avalible and "soon". Take a look at the video in the following link to see some of the Ingame XMB in use :)

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/06/30/watch-as-all-your-ps3-dreams-come-true-in-this-2-40-video/

See the guy in the video above? That's Eric Lempel and he's about to show off the number one requested feature for the PlayStation 3; in-game XMB. This feature is only half of what we can expect in firmware 2.40, which is due out "soon." Watch as Eric effortlessly receives and responds to messages whilst playing a game, swaps immediately from GT5:P to PixelJunk Monsters, switches in some background music from the PS3's HDD and ... searches on google.

Although Sony said that Trophies will not be awarded retroactively (i.e. you'd have to re-play games in order to get the associated Trophies), it seems now like it's really up to developers.

Criterion have announced (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/07/01/trophies-timed-challenges-for-burnout-paradise/comment-page-1/#comment-77737) that Trophies for Burnout Paradise will be awarded retroactively, meaning that you won't need to win all the races and take all the challenges again.

Ooops.

I've seen various posts on different forums about people having problems with FW 2.40... quite a few people with 60GB PS3s say it's bricked their consoles, others say they have had freezing & other issues.

And it seems Sony have actually pulled 2.40...

Just turned mine on, to get the update... Nothing there.

Then found this while searching online:

Just was about to post about this myself lol. I can confirm that its not a problem with the 60GB PS3 as thats what I have and have been running the new 2.40 firmware all day without a hitch.

I have been reading around about diffrent problems. Hard to know whats for real and what's Xbot's talking crap to wind people up. As far as I can tell though there may be a problem with certain hard-drive's that people may have installed. Also another possible fault is to do with it not recognizing some music CD's or the PS3 not being able to boot when a music CD is in the drive.

All seems very strange to me. There is obviously some kind of fault going on but there's no real way of knowing what yet.

PS3fanboy.com has confirmed that the update has been pulled and are waiting to hear news from Sony as to why.

Good job you didnt get it. Am also now reading on the official American PS website of some people who seem to have dead PS3's. If this is for real then Sony have made a BIG BIG mistake here. Still not clear whats true and whats not with so many diffrent report's. Guess we will just have to wait for a update from Sony.

Intresting that all the reports am seeing seem to be comming from America. From the people in the UK all am reading is the update is fine. Could just be what am reading upto now. Will update if I find anything of use.

Sony Response (Kind Off)

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/07/02/firmware-v240-status/

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
We’ll provide further information as necessary here (http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/firmware/) on the Blog.

Firmware 2.40 got pulled by Sony, soon after release, after reports of some people having problems with it (freezing, "bricked" consoles, etc.).

Sony have apparently iron out the bugs, & will be (hopefully) releasing version 2.41 on Wednesday (2.40 without the "bricking"!).

Tezcatlipoca

Yeah, 2.41 is AFAIK purely a bug fix for 2.40 (due to the bricking issues).

It's basically 2.40 (in-game XMB & Trophies etc.), but without the problems.

Have many people tried this update yet?

One of the guys here is having a rant as it seems that the update removed his PS3's ability to recognise any discs he puts in the drive. Apparently Sony said they'd send him a replacement PS3 fairly early on in to the call to them so it sounds a bit ominous.

Sony say they will repair any PS3's bricked by the 2.40 update free. As they should of course. Funny it comes from SCEA and nothing from SCEE. Maybe it was only in america or maybe they just neglected to meantion Europe again. They have always been quite good about things like this in the past in any case.

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/07/10/bricked-by-firmware-2-40-scea-will-fix-your-ps3-for-free/

Some unfortunate readers had their systems bricked by firmware 2.40. A PR representative from SCEA has informed us that they will fix your PS3 system for free if you were one of the few unlucky enough to have a bricked system. How's that for customer service?

"Our Consumer Services department is working directly with any impacted PS3 users, and, if it's determined that they were affected solely by the 2.40 issue, then their units will be repaired or exchanged at no cost. SCEA stands behind its products and always works to ensure the best possible consumer experience."
