View Full Version : http - capped speed?

Hi all,

Firstly, sorry if this has been asked (and answered previously); I used the search but to no avail.
Basically my connection seems capped whenever using the http protocol.
If I'm using NNTP with multiple threads then I get the full 20mbit service.
When using http I can never seem to get above 10mbit, regardless of the connections.
This is seen not only on speedtesters but also on a dedicated server I have access to.
At work we have an extremely fast connection and my server maxes this out, but my connection on Virgin never creeps above 1000k/s (using http).
Now I'm not whinging or moaning, I couldn't care less to be honest. I just want to know if anybody is aware of kind of restrictions?

Thanks

I've noticed the same thing on Be. I'd recommend using a download manager (such as Getright) to split the file into segments and download the segments simultaneously.

:welcome: to the forum, BTW

Thanks for the reply and the welcome :D

Anybody else on Virgin noticed this?

Its not a restriction by the ISP. Its the tcp/ip protocol restricting it. You can use a tcp optimiser to try and fix it, but otherwise you're stuck with making multiple connections. I suffer the same issue too, as will everyone. Its all to do with latency too, the lower the latency the higher speed will likely be on a single thread. Thats why USA downloads are often slower too.

You could try this TCP/IP Optimiser as AbyssUnderground (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/../members/12486.html) has said above below is the link.

TCP Optimiser is actually on the Virginmedia website click on this link and read about it.

http://help2.virginmedia.com/help/ge...anced_optimise

Then the link to the Speedguide site

www.speedguide.net (http://www.speedguide.net).

Or the link direct to the Optimiser.
