You mean 10Mb/s.

And it appears you're still on 4Mb. Try unplugging your modem, and plugging it back in.

User/pass: root

Go down to "Operation Configuration".

Copy what is on that page.

100Mbps is the speed of your network card. 3937 kbps is 4MB. not bad for a 10MB connection. wait till later it'll get even better :D

where do I go and copy that information...user / pass: root...what does this do or show...

"Gary L" are you saying it will get faster, or not...' Also if I am on 10mbs then surely it should speed at 10mbs....

"Gary L" are you saying it will get faster, or not...' Also if I am on 10mbs then surely it should speed at 10mbs....

It will show us what speed you're on. For me it shows:

Network Access : Enabled
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10240000 bps
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 512000 bps
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1
Software Upgrade File Name : ntlhm120_ntl0002.cpr
Software Upgrade AdminStatus : allowProvisioningUpgrade
Software Upgrade OperStatus : completeFromProvisioning

The bit in bold shows my download speed as 10Mb, and my download at 512Kb I think.

It'll more than likely get slower. not unuseable but slower. you may be in an oversubscribed area where there are too many people sold the same product and are having to share on a much larger ratio than there should be. that's why there is such a thing as STM.

Believe it or not, some people find that since upgrading their speed they are worse off than they were on the slower speed.

You cant blame him...most of us are with the none stop STM bull...prices going up, phorm amongst other things like lack of network upgrades, failing infrastructure, over subscription, cloners on the network etc.

Hardly going to be happy if your paying for *upto 20mbit and dont even get 50% of it etc are you?

Anyway to the OP, your on 4mbit, 100mbit is your ethernet connection.

You will be upgrading to 10mbit sometime in the futre although its unknown as to when as VM keep changing dates for everywhere.

Why would I say that? I say bitter as the only posts you have posted on here about vm have been negative ones, I understand ur angry but if some asks for help then help no need to add a negative comment aswell

He said he was upgraded Tuesday, the lady told him he was now on 10 too.
I should have said she lied to you, and left you to tell him the opposite.

only way to tell is for him to post is modem config thingy go to 192.168.100.1 in your browser look at downstream

seaofpepsicola
12-06-2008, 17:15
can someone talk me through modem config thingy...lol...

The reason I upgraded is because I phoned VM to see what I could do to cut my bill, was going to get rid of TV but she said that is only £9 a month so left that, she then said upgrade to 100MB and it reduces bill by £12...so paying £50 a month instead of over £60

have talk 24 national...and TV apart from movies or sports...

go here: http://192.168.100.1/

click login, when asked for username/password enter "root" for both (without the quotes)

click the link "Operation Config", will be on the left hand side

copy and paste the 2 lines that say:

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : <some number>
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : <some number>

It means you were lied to :D

You were on 2Mb before, and she said you would be upgraded to 10Mb straight away?
Have you turned the modem off for a bit and turned back on since?

seaofpepsicola
12-06-2008, 19:30
told me upgrade would be done whilst I was on phone, then said she has done it. I know I have reduced bill now..but cant help thinking something aint right, but if its going to be free in future they will change prices wont they reduce it the price, though I have lower bill. I know its complicated.

So should I phone and say I was promised 10mbs..but am only getting 4mbs...though on network connections it has gone to 100.0mbs...so from their end it will show as 10mbs...

Gary L
12-06-2008, 19:35
Who's choice was it to upgrade? was it their saying you would get 10Mb now?
what area are you in? this is the upgrade list. http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/existingcustomers/faster/schedule.html

Network connections at 100 won't tell them anything. it was 100 before anyway.

It seems the upgrade referred to was from 2Mb/s to 4Mb/s - which was done.

The upgrade from 4Mb/s to 10Mb/s is being rolled out area by area, if your area hasn't been done, yet, it won't do you any good phoning up, customer support don't work in the headends ;)

As stated before, the 100Mb/s you are seeing for your LOCAL connection is your internal network speed, nothing to do with the external network to Virgin Media - if your modem says it is configured for 4Mb/s they will see it as 4Mb/s.

All you can do is reboot the modem to see if it picks up the new config file - if it doesn't, you will have to wait for your area to be upgraded

@seaofpepsicola:
The reason why you are seeing 100Mb is that is the speed of your network card inside your PC, there are 3 different speeds, 10Mb, 100Mb & 1000Mb(1Gb)

Now just because your network card says 100Mb it dont mean thats your internet speed, it just means that, providing you connect the lead from the network card to another, you will be able to transfer files at a maximum of 100Mb(10MegaBytes a second max) as there are 8 bits to a byte etc...

I hope this has helped you understand, as at first I was confused when I saw it said 100Mb when I was only on a 750Kb internet connection :)
