View Full Version : do I have the 50mb service?

My download speed from giganews maxes out at 7.44mB/s (see attached jpg) which if I translate to megabits equals 60mb!? Am I missing something here?? I'm in the Camden area which, from what I read in the past, isn't one of the 50mb trial areas.

Cheers!

According to that it's 7millibytes per second...now that is weird!!!

Kymmy ;)

PS..without a new modem you won't get 50Mb as the 50Mb trial is on Docsis3

well thats strange as that modem only handles euro DOCISIS 2.0 which I didnt think VM ever used

Ok how large was the whole download, and how long did it take to download? If you can supply both those details we can work out roughly the real speed that you downloaded at.

I think its bits and not bytes the screenshot. divide it by 8.

I thought that was strange but was going on the model number they gave out, they also do another verion designed for pure DOCSIS which is the DPC2100

No it doesn't? From the features "Backward compatible with existing EuroDOCSIS 1.1 and 1.0 networks".

Correcto, if you look at the screenshot its mB and not MB

I don't use Newsbin pro but isn't that just showing how much he's downloaded on that particular part? The top column says size and not speed.

I dont think so as it shows upload and he aint uploading to usenet

To answer an earlier question, it takes about 7-8 minutes to download that 1.12gb set of files.

And to respond to the comment that the traffic monitor is in megabits, I have attached another jpg to this post with the options of DU Meter showing the program is set to kilobytes not kilobits, while a download is in progress in the background.

Thanks for all the responses. :)

It's the capitalisation of the 'b' that matters, b = bits, B = bytes

the capitalisation of the 'm' matters as well

m = milli (one millionth ) as in millimetres

M = mega (one million ) as in megabits

- as kymmy implied above, there is no such thing as a mB, or a mb, for that matter ...

technically true however as there isn't a millionth of a bit/byte, it's taken that Mb and mb both mean megabits (altho technically not)

Doesn't that work out to 2.3MB/s (or 18Mb/s)?

I've twice had weird speeds reported by applications/OS and a reboot sorted the problem out both times.

It also supports DOCSIS, which is what's used in Camden.

downloading a 1.2GB file takes me about 8 minutes on my 20Mb connection, (approx 2400 KB/s) which matches what danyuul is getting, so it looks like the displayed speed is wrong.

true, you cannot have a fraction of a bit - not while being discrete, anyway ;)

- of course if you were discreet, no-one would ever know :D

Yup, installed the latest version of DU Meter and lo and behold the speed is now maxing out at 2.4mB/s. Thanks for the help guys!

Of course you can! If I was to receive one entire byte per minute, then that would be 0.133 b/s, or 133 mb/s! You may not be able to download a fraction of a bit, but as a rate, it's entirely possible.
