Anybody got any idea how to stay current with Phorm developments other than reading the new posts to the enormous thread?
I simply can't devote an hour every day...

Used the links, fired off the emails etc.
Got a reply from local MP Jack Straw well one of his lakkies stating that he had written to John Hutton sec of state for business and enterprise and regulatory reform, and will update me as and when there are any further developments.

So not apathy just waiting for the wheels of government to eventually start and crawl into motion.:D

If it's just some crap cookies calling home which you CAN opt out of, then I'm not bothered. It's the sly tactics of not informing customers of potential privacy infringements that bothers me. Oh wait, isn't exactly what phorm was until they were forced to reveal it's existence and purpose?

Seems like you have 2 choices.
1) Accept, and learn to live with it.
2) Jump ship and find a different isp.

Since I can't take 2, I live too far from an ADSL enabled exchange for a decent speed, plus I can't afford BT's installation and line rental charges on top of any ISP charges, I have to do item 1. Accept and learn to live with it. Which *isses me off.

Well my main problem with the main thread is that I basically am in the dark about most of what is discussed...So even IF the rest of VM's and BTs customers were reading this forum and that thread they would soon lose interest because they too will find much of the jargon impenetrable. I try to keep up but I cannot add anything to the discussion.I can't even explain it to others whom I've tried to warn about the issue.

Sounds like you're doing ok if you are picking up any part of it.
It's really pretty simple. Phorm will have access to everything you can see on any webpage you visit and basically can do whatever they please with that data.

Still, when I think about some of my clients who are puzzled when I even ask them what browser they use I guess it's hardly surprising that more people are not alarmed by what is happening.

or option 3, refuse their cookies forcing them to not track your browsing

Thankfully i have a fully working BT line ready and a distance of 1.5Km from the exchange, so i will take the dump all VM services route.

For posters who are apathetic about Phorm.

The problem with this is that there will now be two discussions on Phorm instead of one, so it will take longer to absorb all new posts from the 2 new threads.

Perhaps this one should be used as a general information only thread rather than being used for the debate on Phorm, as one already exists.

I'd have to agree with this.

I have been following, and contributing, to the main discussion for months and even I find it difficult to keep up with developments due to the pace at which the thread moves, especially when new information comes to light. The thread has, on occasion, become diluted in relevant content and inflated with side issues. This is fully understandable given the nature of the Phorm issue and some side issue discussions lead to others that are more relevant.
Trying to look back to find relevant information is getting increasingly more difficult as there are currently 8300 posts spread over 559 pages.

Perhaps this, or another, thread could be used to detail relevant and important developments on the Phorm issue or alternatively a list of links to specific posts in the main thread.

I think the latter would be better... a sort of index to the information.

The size of the discussion thread is now preventing dissemination of important information, Mick. Perhaps you should delete this thread and start another (as "announce-only") that would be limited to simply important or significant news and developments with no discussion permitted?

I have to say, I agree with Mick, ceedee and icsys. Convert this thread into the "essence" of the other thread, with background information and chronological links to relevant posts and news items. Anyone interested can inform themselves of the progress so far, then join the main thread, contributing their thoughts and opinions.

Richard.

That's as far as my understanding goes. It's the detailed stuff that mystifies me.

Phorm will place a server within the ISP network. This server uses a layer 7 switch, this switch allows deep packet inspection of all your web surfing. When you browse the internet, the websites and pages that you see are transferred to and from your PC in 'packets' of information, it is these 'packets' of information that are intercepted, inspected and profiled.

By inspecting the pages you visit, phorm can strip out information of interest and at the same time give you a unique identification number (UID) so that you can be identified each time you browse the internet. As you continue to browse further information from your surfing is added to your profile.

From the outset Phorm wanted this system to be opt-out. i.e. you are profiled by default unless you opt-out.

If you opt-out you still get profiled, just the ads and anti-phishing is disabled. (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33628733-virgin-media-phorm-webwise-adverts-updated-page-43.html#post34501778) [first posted 6/3/2008]

If you're struggling to know how/who/what to complain, with inspiration from Alex, I've made it a little bit easier for you...

Use this page to generate a letter to send to your MP in just 2 mouse clicks;

http://www.dephormation.org.uk/letters/

All you need is an envelope and a stamp (not supplied!).

Otherwise, a good place to look for the essential information is the inphormationdesk.org (http://www.inphormationdesk.org)

Anybody got any idea how to stay current with Phorm developments other than reading the new posts to the enormous thread?
I simply can't devote an hour every day...

Don't read it ?

I have not visited these forums for a couple of months and my life has been bliss.

Re-visited it today and my good quality of life has been adversely affected by a miserable bunch of people ranting and moaning about phorm.

Out of sight - out of mind...

As this thread has not been locked/deleted does this mean
we are allowed to talk about Phorm without fear of being banned ?

Nobody got banned for talking about Phorm. Several people got banned because they forgot their manners, took side-swipes at the team who run this site and persistently ignored our terms of use or tried playing word-games with them.

Please in particular note my italics above as they apply directly to you.

We will not permit any ongoing agitation that appears to us to be a continuation of the unacceptable behaviour exhibited in the previous Phorm thread.

As we have now stated on several occasions, we are currently sifting the mountains of dross in the previous Phorm thread in an attempt to extract useful information, which will form the basis of several new threads that the team will open in due course.

In the meantime, any more old, un-closed Phorm threads that are still lurking in this forum are liable to get closed as and when they re-surface, so please do us all a favour and leave well alone.

This thread is now closed.
