View Full Version : New modem, slow speed

Hi all,

Ever since I received a NTL255 modem when my Terayon (which chugged along happily at about 3.5 meg) bit the dust I've struggled to break the 2 meg barrier.

When I was on the 4 meg package I thought nothing of this as everyone on this forum seem to suffer from slow speeds. Now I have been upgraded to 10 meg, nothing's changed.

After a call to customer services, they reset the account and the modem went dead for an hour.

I'm not being capped as the computer has been off all day.

I've tried with/without router, rebooting, everything that's suggested in previous posts.

Here's a speed test.

Wed, 4 Jun 2008 17:15:23 UTC

Test 1: 1024K took 4281 ms = 239.2 KB/sec, approx 1971 Kbps, 1.92 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 4266 ms = 240 KB/sec, approx 1978 Kbps, 1.93 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 4265 ms = 240.1 KB/sec, approx 1978 Kbps, 1.93 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 8547 ms = 239.6 KB/sec, approx 1974 Kbps, 1.93 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1975 Kbps, 1.93 Mbps

I've noticed that in the modem setup page, it's still set to 2 meg.

Cable Modem Operation Configuration
Network Access : Allowed
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 2048000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 200000
Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1
Modem Capability : Concatenation Enabled, Fragametation Enabled, PHS Disabled

Any suggestions on what to do next? Am I missing something really obvious?

Cheers in advance for any help,
Geoff

A bit more digging.

I'm not an expert on these things, but I saw the word critical three times.

A bit more digging.

disregard the logs, your problem is that your modem config is set for 2Mb

- as Zeph said, give them a ring on 151 to get them to apply the correct config file.

Thanks for the replies, I rang 151, got put through to India and was told there was no problem, I explained what I have said here and was told that they can't/won't send a modem config file!!!!

Is there another number to ring where you get to speak to someone a little more technically minded?

In that case, phone customer service (150) & have your bill reduced to match the 2 meg your modem is set to & ask for compensation for the time you have been paying for 4 meg & not getting it.

I don't understand why the technical support people cannot see your modem is set on the wrong tier ???

They can see what you are supposed to be on, but if the account page that the Rep is looking at shows that you are on 2Mb not 4Mb as you say you are supposed to be on,then possibly the is an error with the account then only Customer Care can deal with as Technical Support cannot correct account errors.

The best thing to do is to ring 150.

Ah - thanks for that, I hadn't considered that the billing might be wrong - although it seems strange for that to happen as a result of a modem change ?

He is on the NTL side and since the billing migration anything can happen and does happen.

I reccomend that he calls 150.

And do please ignore your modem logs as what happens when your modem reboots is that every single update available for that modem is received at once even if not required.
Some of my own modem logs have the date stamp 1970 in them and broadband was not around then!
