Hi guys,
Its been about a week now, my internet start grinding to a halt! So slow gettin about 1mb tops!

I called up my VM last week and they said my current connection (20MB) was too high for my modem and was swamping it, and they swapped it to a new one and this will resolve all issues!

So, as you can probably guess when the new modem arrived today it is just the same if not slower!

One of the many technicians I spoke to on the phone over the past few days mentioned a loss in PING, so i checked it out! and it seems im loosing 50%!
However each time I carry this ping. google.com out, it changes! sometimes i loose nothing sometimes i loose 25%, sometimes i loose 50 or more! So its very unstable!

The last call I spent with virgin media said I had spyware and it was the definite problem to all my problems because I had 25 TCP Protocols open when using the "NETSTAT - A" + "Netstat" is showing 5-6 establised connections command in Commandpromt!
After hours on my slow connection trying to download Spybot and using windows defender, i didnt find one virus or spyware!

So now im back to square one!!! Please help!! I couldn't bare another 40min conversation to some guy who doesn't know a thing, and costing me 25p a minute!!

UPDATE :
After calling about 10 minutes ago, the guy said it is DEFINITELY spyware and its eating up my bandwidth, it needs to be removed.

Mines been acting up for a while now although with a lot better speeds than you have. My 20 mb on giganews was down to 10meg, strange thing is downloaded 5 gig and no traffic shaping kicked in at all, weird.

speedtest isn't the most reliable test to guage speed, try d/ling 2-3 large files from somewhere like http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/ , the larger files will give a d/l speed over a period of time and this is much better than speedtest's short burst files and will give you a much better idea of what speed your getting.

With Vista you can have 30 TCP and UDP in the DOS screen and it does not mean Spyware, now if it was XP it would be another matter, I presume it was our scripted friends that told you that.

You probably rebooted your modem and received the 20Mb Docsis file which increased your speed.

They probably sent a hit which provisioned your Account correctly, you then unplugged your modem then plugged it back and the Docsis was downloaded to your modem.

Download this TCP Optimizer (http://www.speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe) and set to 20000

Another thing you could try.

I found Firefox to be the fastest browser going. If you use this, try the following, it really does speed it up even faster:

1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll
down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time.
When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really
speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Just Double Click it

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Just Double Click it

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This
means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.
Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0".
This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages 2-30 times faster now.

Put the slider right over to the right and have a play round with the settings.

I have Firefox, Firefox 3b5,Safari,Opera and IE8 on my PC just to get an idea of how each works, plus Outlook Express , Outlook and Thunderbird all fully setup.

I get bored!!

Of course making a generalised insult like that is really going to win friends, given that some of those customer service people do post here :(

You sound like you've had EXACTLY the same experience that I've had!

I'm on Vista and netstat showed lots going on too, but I am convinced no spyware on my laptop. Traceroute gave lots of asterisks and timeouts, it would take multiple refreshes to load a webpage and downloading anythin was out of the question.

My connection has been deteriorating since about May 1st, very unstable, with download speeds getting as low as bytes per second, before it actually ground to a total stop on Sunday afternoon with modem ethernet light gone off.
Unplugged modem and left it off for two days and now it's miraculously working perfectly...

Can this be a concidence?

Well he has been talking to a Telewest Tech and I did not take offence,I would rather help someone.:)

Oh and charliannear it is a coincidence as you are both on completely different Networks.;)

There's nothing wrong with the internet security package I've got installed- my laptop is clean.
And it's up to me which browser I use.

Thanks for your suggestions though.

When I'm connected to a decent internet connection, everything is working as it should.
When I'm connected to my modem things aren't as rosey.
When my modem has been on for a while, my speeds continually deteriorate to the point where it is unuseable. I left it off for two days and when I turned it back on it was perfect. 24 hours later it is on the decline again (although marginally faster this morning than it was last night, but that's probably because less people are online).

Sorry to hijack!
