Found a link for this on DS.

Anyone know if it's good stuff?
Worth leaving on?

him needs more info I can not see how its gonna block info if it just says where a site carrying it is. If/when VM implement it it will be on our connection instead of on sites

---------- Post added at 23:19 ---------- Previous post was at 23:18 ----------

actually it does say it stops it when it first loads so this is a plus

How you mean?

I'm not 100% sure on it yet. First I've heard of it today.
I tend to visit only about a dozen sites to be honest, so probably overkill.
It's just the search thing that concerns me.

Needs a bit of testing, I'm sure.

Pete, who wrote it, has recently joined the forum and I'm sure he'll be happy to answer all your questions about Dephormation when he gets here.

For me, using FF v2.0.0.13, the extension works fine and causes no problems when browsing.
I'd say it's a phantastic contribution to the community!

Couldn't agree more ceedee, I d/l this about a month ago now and absolutely no problems. I know people say its only a sticking plaster, but anything that makes life a bit harder for Phorm is OK by me.

PS If you read this Pete welcome to the forum.:)

I'm guessing that's because I'm using FF3b5?

And what does this addon do exactly?

I suspect it didn't like the direct link rather than through FF.

As I rarely get ads anyway (Popup blocker & Script Blocker) will this actually affect my internet use as no one will gain from what they find out as I shall probably never see it?

Just a thought! :shrug:

The Dephormation extension is an attempt to stop Phorm profiling your browsing clickstream, not block the ads they'll target at you.
(And it ensures that the opt-out cookie won't get deleted.)

So many queries...

@kryogenik

Is it good stuff. Yes! (but you'd expect me to say that). Its open source; you can look at the code and see what its up to. The operative bit is quite straight foward, overlay.js, I think you'll be suprised.

@angua
@cimt

You'll probably need to review the FF3 install notes. I don't provide secure updates, and probably never will. If you rely on Dephormation to any great extent you really need a new ISP.

@zinglebarb

Is it the solution? No, the only effective solution to stop Phorm is switching ISP. I can't emphasize that enough to people. Dephormation is the sticking plaster to get you into a Phorm free ISP. Don't stay with an ISP that implements Phorm, even on an opt in basis (because until the Police/Home Office/ICO get their heads out of the sand you have no protection if they ignore your preferences as they did in the BT trials in 2006/07).

The way it currently works, it sets the cookies Phorm use to enforce their crazed opt out cookie system. The BT system may be different but they haven't published the details. When they do, I'll change the code.

But it wont protect other applications, in particular Internet Explorer, MS Office or OpenOffice, or even Outlook.

@ceedee and others

If you want a perfect combo for stopping ads, I'm told adblock plus is a worthwhile addition to suppress advertising. And privoxy. Though note I don't use either of them.

Try the tip about secure updates in this post, if you are both using a beta version of FF3...

After using this, I seem to be getting the feeling that my Internet has speeded up considerably, which is interesting.

Uncheck the 'Show dephormation startup alert' box in the addon preferences...

Click on Tools > Add-ons, then select Dephormation and click on Options.

Untick everything that begins with "show" (theres only 3 things to deselect anyway).

Once done click on Ok and then restart Firefox and your done.
