View Full Version : What is the maximum "acceptable" monthly bandwidth usage?

All the documentation I can find regarding bandwidth limits for virginmedia refers to the acceptable usage policy but there is no reference to even a ball park figure of an upper limit.

As far as I can tell acceptable usage in regards to bandwidth is anything that doesn't effect other users and the way I read that is you can download as much as you like outside of peak time i.e. the very early hours of the day.

Thanks to the STM I very rarely even turn my modem on from 4pm to 9pm these days.

Does anybody have any prior experience or further information on what Virgin considers acceptable usage when it comes to monthly download limits.

All I know is that despite the amount I download they have never written to me so I don't worry about it.

I think if you were in danger of exceeding what they would consider the upper limit they would tell you.

I've just done the calculations, and so far this year, my average monthly usage is 131.4Gb

I don't worry about the 4-9pm restrictions, and VM has never taken any action against me.

My advice would be not to worry about it, and there's no reason for you to avoid using your connection between 4-9pm, just don't go overboard between these times.

Thanks for the feedback.

I don't really "avoid" using my connection between 4 & 9 as such, I just don't normally get in from work until 6, add in other real life considerations and it's simpler to just wait the extra hour or so.

There is no usage limit.
The only limit is if you go over a certain amount (depending on which service you are signed up to) they will limit your download speed and upload speed meaning you'd be able to only upload/download a smaller amount on that time frame.

As said above, unlimited. You can download at full speed 24/7 except for when the STM hits you. I have for about a week in total in the last month grabbing about 120GB of data from my dedicated server.

to be fair although its unlimited on how much you can download STM limits you, cuz say if you downloaded 100GB without STM but with STM you downloaded 60GB then clearly that aint unlimited.

Thanks for the additional feedback

Although...

I swear to God some people just look at a thread title and reply without even reading the original post let alone the thread.

On 4mb you get 1.8gb p\h, if you include STM the maximum downloadable amount for 24hrs is 40.7gb multiply that by 365 (days) divide by 12 (months) and that gives you 1,237.95gb per month (avg)

Help!!!

That sure is some nice mathematics there but like I said some people don't read a thread before posting

Well judging by some of the amounts posted here, if true, I'm absoulutely no where near the mythical "acceptable" usage limit.

Feel free to max your connection out 24/7. You paid for "unlimited", after all.
