Hi all,

Must be a few members here with Silentnight mattresses?

What do you think of them? Have you had any problems with them?

I'll go into detail later as to why I'm asking! :)

Cheers

We have one... 5 years old.. comfy but the springs are getting noisy now (twangs in the night when we turn over). Tried to get it inspected under guarantee but were told "it's wear and tear".... so much for the guarantee....

I had exactly the same problem, brought a new mattress 3 or 4 years ago and it came with a 10 year guarantee, as you say the springs get a bit squeaky, the shop told me the same, wear and tear!. What is it guaranteed against?

We have a Silentnight miricoil, its the 3rd silentnight matress we have had in 2 years as the previous 2 were returned under guarantee due to the excessive sag that happened on both sides of the matress and were not big people. The first 2 were exchanged without quibble from our local shop then we decided to opt for the miricoil matress and paid £200 for the privelege on top of the original matress price, and I must say its a far better matress. We also opted for a sprung divan rather than a ridged base. We turn the matress weekly, over from left to right one week and the following week top to bottom.

Erm, looks like silentnight had better change their name to noisynight. I'll be steering well clear of them then. :)

This is kinda the situation we are now in. A few months ago we noticed that our mattress had started to sag. This was the 2nd Silentnight as the first one was also rubbish.

Anyway - dug out the receipt for it today (Argos) and it is 2 weeks over the 1st year warranty - typical!

Phoned Argos and they said it would have to be looked at by an independent specialist. So we said we would take it up with Silentnight and get back to them.

Looking at the Silentnight website, it says they have a guarantee for 5 years providing it's used in conjunction with a Silentnight bedstead.

Now - why should it matter what bedstead you are using it with? We've confirmed that it's ok to use with a slatted bedstead, so why should it matter what base it's on? Alter all - it's only a piece of wood holding it off of the floor!

Ahhhh

Originally we had a slatted bedstead and it sagged, then we brought a new base (rigid) and got a new matress as an exchange, then when this failed we got a new sprung divan and a different matress from silent night.
Personally I think if your about 8st then thats the design remit for silentnight, over that its just pot luck.

Now as for warranty we had both ours within the first year with supplier, we didnt register with silentnight but you may have some recourse with supplier, if that fails you can only try silentnight themselves I suppose.

We've already checked limitations - there is none for slatted / rigid bedstead or any weight limits...

Theres another brand from the people that make Tempur that is like half price and exactly the same. (Made by the same people. When I went to the ideal home exhibition I saw it there on the Tempur stand.

Springs are coming out the under side of ours - tried to get it sorted but they wanted more than the bed and mattress cost to replace it under their "5 year guarantee".

Won't be buying theirs again.

*Bump *

One of the things Silentnight have said us is that you should not sit on the edge of the bed / mattress as it can cause sagging....

So - any of you guys and girls had this recommendation from any mattress manufacturer and is it in writing - i.e. FAQ of mattress guide or are they BS'ing us...

Also - if you not supposed to sit on the side of the mattress, how the hell are you meant to get into bed....jump into it and not touch the sides??

From Silentnight or somebody else?

We got ours from House of Fraser. I don't know what brand it is. It was expensive though, but a very nice mattress. Instructions also included turning the mattress once a month, a least for the first year IIRC.

WE did the same, turning that is. Only trouble being, the weld at the bottom of the frame broke, and the metal came through the cover.Out of guarantee, of course!Be careful how you do the turning or it can be counter productive.

I think it is very unlikely that this company is anything at all to do with Tempur. Tempur is a massive international company, but the company in your link even has a mobile number for a contact.....not exactly what you find with big international companies is it?

I think it is more likely a sales rep spouting a load of rubbish.

I am in the bed trade, and it seems that most of the posts on here mirror what I have often been told by my customers who have previously owned a SN mattress. Unfortunately it is the case with many of the big manufacturers, that quality has been reduced in an attempt to cut production costs.

As for Tempur, you can get far better for a fraction of the price. Pocket sprung with memory foam give better support, shouldn't dip as the reflex foam breaks down, and are far cooler.

As a general rule I would stay well away from the big brand names, or the big retailers if you want good quality for a good price.

OK, I'll bite, as we're going to be buying one soon ... what pocket sprung, memory foam, non-big-brand mattresses would you recommend?

I'm afraid that I can't recommend any brands or models, as I stay impartial in forums, and won't advertise. However I can give you any general advice that you may want, that will help you in your choice.

If u have a back issue i wouldnt recommend Memory Foam.

I know they are supposed to help back and neck issues but when i tried one i could barely walk as it irritated my back so much and caused the sciatica to kick in.

There are a number of issues that you need to consider here:

There are many different memory foam mattresses on the market. Some are excellent quality, giving almost unbeatable support. And others are absolutely terrible. Do you know the make and model of your mattress?
The layer underneath the memory foam is very important. This can be either reflex foam, open coil springs, or pocket springs. Reflex foam and open coil springs give similar support to start with, but in the long run reflex foam can start to dip as the bubbles start to break down in the reflex foam. Pocket springs give the best support, as they contour to your body.
If you are used to a less supportive mattress then it is very common to experience back pains until you back adjusts to a new far more supportive mattress. This can last anything up to about three weeks, depending on the difference in support.
It could be that the firmness of the mattress is unsuitable for you.

The memory foam is only actually there to mould to your body, providing even support, whilst eliminating pressure points. 99% of people with back complaints actually find that memory foam or latex foam work wonders.

it wasnt my mattress it was a mates mattress. He went away for 2 weeks and i was looking after his house as he was having a new kitchen fitted and he told me to use his bed as he had recently bought a new bed which i know that he imported from the states for £1700 as he wanted a specific one.

In that case it was most likely that your back hadn't adjusted to the extra support. You would probably have experienced the same problem with a high quality pocket sprung only mattress.

I wouldn't tell your friend this, but no memory foam mattress is worth £1700.

If he bought them as a package, then it is very common for retailers to use cheap and nasty mattresses. So it may be that this is the problem.

Welshchris

it wasnt a package one, the only reason he bought it from the states is because the bed that he wanted he couldnt get anywhere in the UK and he ordered the matress at the same time because they give him a percentage off because he bought a bed over a specific price.

Well at the end of the day, I really do think it it is a really big shame that for whatever reason, you have been put off a type of mattress that could really help with your back problem.
