Sony is to add Blu Ray Profile 2.0 support in it's next PS3 firmware update..

This means that the PS3 will get BD Live, and makes online gaming possible.

The PS3 will also gain the ability to remember where you left off when you next play a disc. This feature will not be available on discs using BD Java. Sadly, this appears to be most major releases, but should be handy non the less.

the PS3 also gains a new noise-reduction feature that works with standard def content on both BD and DVD.

The PSP can now download music and photos from the PS3, and act as a remote control or speaker for it.

Finally, browsing on the PS3 will be improved, and the video playback system will now play back DivX and WMV videos that are larger than 2 gig.

Sorely tempted to get a PS3 now. Have to wait for a couple of things though. First, a new HDTV or Monitor with HDMI in. Second, enough cash. Sadly, both are unlikely to be arriving anytime within the next few months.

So Blu Ray will finally be getting the web enabled features that HD DVD has had since it launched a year ago, lol.

I still think its a travesty that BR won out over HD DVD which is a better format and was complete and final on its release.

At least the PS3 is upgradeable. All those people that have older stand alone Blu Ray players will probably need to get a new player due to them not being able to recieve updates.

How many stand alone players have internet connections ...

Blu-ray discs have a higher capacity, something that is needed with high def movies in order to get quality and playtime.
