View Full Version : How odd!

Due to some extra downloading and an extended gaming session, I became affected by the traffic shaping last night, somewhere between 7pm and 9pm. I can't be more specific, since the PC was unattended at the time.

However, my PC has been off since around 1:30am, and I still seem to be restricted to 5MB downstream. However, my upstream seems to be back to normal, despite the modem settings!

Downstream Frequency: 402750000 Hz
Upstream Frequency: 25800000 Hz

And yet...

Any ideas? This is the first time I've ever encountered shaping, so I don't know how long it takes to get back to normal.

What ever it is, it isn't traffic shaping. Your upload speed hasn't changed from the normal 20Meg upload limit around 768 Kb/s and when STM'd it should be 192 Kb/s.

Try checking your actual download results by downloading some large files rather than relying on any speedtests.
That speedtest in particular is probably the last one i`d ever put my faith in.

I generally try one of these place with a multithreaded download manager of some description.IF you use FF then the "Down Them All" extension is quite good.

Better than relying on any speedtest anyway.

I will say though...the test above has never been far off any download tests i`ve done these last 3 or 4 months now.

Sun, 02 Mar 2008 11:17:09 GMT

Test 1: 1024K took 370 ms = 2767.6 KB/sec, approx 22805 Kbps, 22.27 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 259 ms = 3953.7 KB/sec, approx 32578 Kbps, 31.81 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 466 ms = 2197.4 KB/sec, approx 18107 Kbps, 17.68 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 1367 ms = 1498.2 KB/sec, approx 12345 Kbps, 12.06 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 21459 Kbps, 20.96 Mbps

Since November-ish it`s generally been spot on with whatever downloads tests i`ve done.Of course, prior to that our 20Mb was as dire as it could possibly be for the preceding 5 months, right from the initial upgrade last June in fact.

I would still never rely on the test alone though.

Whatever it was, it seems to have passed now. I just got this result:

So I tried downloading a large file (OpenOffice), and I got speeds approaching 2400kB/s !!!

I can't recall the modem's usual upstream figure, but I know the downstream usually started with 2048 - so something's definitely different there.

Anyhoo, it's back to normal now, so I don't care!

Thanks for the input.

Downstream Frequency: 402750000 Hz
Upstream Frequency: 25800000 Hz

That's the frequency your modem modem locks onto not your downstream and upstream rate.

Bit Rate 20480000 bits/sec
Bit Rate 768000 bits/sec
This is your up n downstream rate.

You're right, of course... and I knew that.

Apologies - I've no idea where my head was this morning to post those figures.

Neighbours had a party last night... must be lack of sleep. :dozey:
