Hi Guys

Wonder if you could help with another query please?

My Dad is gets his VM BB installed next week (yours truly will have to do all the Tech Support) He has had some info from VM and they say install the disk you will get and use the code on the disk...

My initial reaction was dont install the disk you wont need any software but thinking about this I have vague memories of having to go to a specific URL and registering something when I had my VM BB installed but thats years ago and since then and with many changes of computer later I have never needed to re-visit his and never installed any VM software.

Can somebody remind me whats needed to get a brand new VM BB connection up and running beyond plugging in the Cat5 cable and making the obvious settings in Windows please?

You don't need the install disk unless you are still relying on USB in which case you need the drivers. If you are on Vista, unless they've recently changed it, the install disk don't work anyway.

All you will need is the instruction booklet, and the codes you will be supplied with by letter (if you don't get the codes, you have to call CS).

The procedure is simple:

On PC, disconnect any previous modems, dial up leads or whatever. If it's been on internet before with another ISP, delete their software. Check the ethernet network connection is is enabled, with the TCP/IP properties on auto. Browser (internet Explorer) Options > Connections set to "never dial".
Modem and PC powered off.
Connect ethernet between modem and PC
Power on modem, let settle
Power on PC, let settle
Open internet explorer
In the browser enter "http://autoreg.autoregister.net" (you might type something different if you are ex telewest area), or whatever the instruction booklet will tell you.
follow the on screen instructions, where you will enter the codes given and select your email / user name accounts.
If this replaces a VM dial up account, you'll have setup a new email account. Call the broadband support line and they'll then merge the dial up into your new broadband accounts, so you can retain access to the old emails.

Since December in ex-ntl areas they no longer give out a CD and the address has now been changed to http://activation.virginmedia.com

If you have an ntlworld.com dial up account and you can remember the password ;) , you can select 'I have a dial up account that I wish to close and transfer my e-mail' (or similar wording) as part of the registration
