Now call me a cinic or a moaner but at 3pm on a 20MB connection i should be getting more that 56kb download speed from a news group and these slow speeds have been going on for a while.
I have been with NTL/Virgin since it was instaled in the northwest so it is more years than i care to remember but i am starting to get very disillutioned with the internet service.
The rest of my package i like but as an avid internet user (gaming and some music downloading from pay sites) this part is important to me and i think i pay well for the privilage of a 20mb connection but when you get nowhere near 20mb i have to think to myself is it really worth it

Have you got an up-to-date modem?
Are these figures gained when the modem is directly connected to the computer (ie no router)?
Have you tried this: http://www.virginmedia.com/help/20mb-broadband-optimisation.php ?

Don't use speedtest sties, they're not the most reliable source. Download a few files simultaneously from http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com or http://microsoft.com (something big, like Flight Sim demo) and add the speeds together.
