Hi all,

We have had cable for the past 2 years and the wall box for the tv is in the living room, when we upgraded to V+ along with a 40" lcd tv we decided to move into the larger back room and when the enginner visited he ran a new longer length of cable through the dividing wall (through a hole I had already drilled for him) to the new box. We have now (at the request of my beloved wife ) moved back into the front living room this weekend, but because the cable has the connector on it I cant push it back through the wall into the front room, therefore we cant watch the tv.

My question is this, can I phone Virgin up and ask them to either post or drop through my door, a 3 meter length of cable with the connectors either end so I can hook our tv back up? If so do you think they would charge for this and would I be better off just purchasing one off Ebay?

many thanks.

Virgin will come out and do it for you but will charge £75 for it, just go down to local electrical wholesalers and buy the bits for about £2 thats what i did and haven't had any problems

They will not do this. The only way to get this done by VM is to pay a £75 fee for a visit by an installer.

The best way to do it is by chopping the connector of and fitting a new one yourself.

You can buy them here http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?MenuNo=12308&MenuName=F-Type+Connectors&FromMenu=y&doy=search

fit them here http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/fconn.htm

Hi
Glad all is going well
May I just make one point.
Some people on here have sky equipment which is owned by the subscriber.
The equipment you have connected is owed by VM.
I am in no way saying what you have done WILL affect the equipment but if the equipment fails in the future and the tech sees the changes you have made you may not get the support you felt was free as the equipment is owned by VM.
Saving £75.00 now has invalidated the service agreement as you have now connected your own equipment to that owned by VM.

Thanks for the advice Colin but as I am already paying them over £50 a month to use their equipment there is no way on god's earth I am paying them another £75 just to attach a 1 metre length of co-ax, something a muppet could do blindfolded!
Should there ever be a problem with getting "their" equipment fixed due to me shortening my cable then they will be told to remove it all and I'll settle for Freeview!

I am a customer, not a free cash machine! ;)

I do appreciate what you are saying though and thanks :) though I would like to add that I mentioned the possibility of moving rooms to the engineer that installed it all and he told me to do it myself and if I didnt want to that I should phone customer service and ask them to send me a self-install kit (whatever that it) which I may just do anyway.

The twist on connectors are designed for sky installations. If you want a more permanent solution without paying Virgin then try here. http://www.mediachannels.co.uk/.

As for colin-bennett . If the OP had damaged the cable and had to get Virgin out to fix it then I guess they might have charged. In this case he seems more than capable of sorting it himself. Lets not forget before the exodus of tech support jobs to the sub continent faults where able to make up and send out cables to length for customers.

Thanks handyman, that site is great. For just over a fiver I can get a 1 metre length already made complete with F-connectors and that includes delivery!

thanks :)

Its proper stuff as well. Not the skinny sky cable.
