Like the rest of you here, having hell with my 20mb connection.

getting an ave of 1.4Mbps yet at 5am its up to 18-20 meg.

usual rubbish from CS. had an engineer around yesterday. as soon as he stepped out of his van he looked defeated.

He changed the modem to a 255 model and didnt think it would do any good, his words were simply 'oversubscribed'

Phoned support again last night to tell them the engineers visit didnt help and that he suggested i should ask for a UBR move. Virgin said my UBR was fine and that another engineer visit should be arranged. I told the agent that i had an engineer a few hours earlier and what would a second engineer do. she said check signal levels and change the modem. i explained theis is exactly what the first engineer did. she replied with 'ive been told by my superior that this is all we can do.'

Could someone look into my UBR for issues? i dont know what it is, GRC list it as:
cpc4-seve9-0-0-cust***.popl.cable.ntl.com

I dont see this in my traceroutes, which hop would it be?...

thanks guys,

Ok so cpc4-seve9-0-0-cust***.popl.cable.ntl.com is the address of the UBR.

Other posts here have a locality indicator suxh as uxb (uxbridge) am i right in thinking that Pop1 may be poplar, london?

Apologies Paul, wasn't aware of that one.

could the tools be wrong?

I have finally got VM to admit that the UBR i was on was oversubcribed (max of 400 - 6pm tonight 436)

After lots of holding and callbacks the teccy finally said he had been authorised to move me to another UBR. he did this while i was on the phone however the address never changed.

according to VM the tools only show the UBR you 'should' be on. he says im now on UBR 7 however the tools still show 9.

am i being fobbed off?

ubr09seve, actually. Shortened to 'seve9'. 'popl' is Poplar, 'seve' is Seven Kings, East London, 'wapk' is Waltham Park.

The variable ping times are very indicative of oversubscription, if you had a Trojan leaching bandwidth it would be more consistently slow, while if your line was rubbish there'd be dropped packets.

I can check remotely if you like, PM me the modem MAC address.

Er, I hate to say it, but yes. You can be moved between upstreams remotely but not UBRs, which are hard-wired to particular areas and only changed by serious men with serious planning (which does go on all the time, however).

I seriously need to check you out remotely.

SapperGB

I understand i cant be physically moved to another UBR, its the lines that feed it.

im confused m8, im currently behind a router (its not the problem honest lol). id love to have you 'check me out' id rather not PM you then have to unhook from the router for a while.

U use MSN?
ive PM'd you my Addy and also mac address, could you send me a msg when u wanna have a snoop?

Cheers.

**EDIT**
Now have suitable IM tool

Well i finally lost my rag last night and called to be downgraded. however after giving it some thought i inagined a dwongrade to 4mb wouldnt resolve any subscription issue as it would just be a cap on the modem. I therefore called at 8am this morning and explained that i dont think it would help. CS placed me back up to XL and have given me it half price for 3 months.

OFC im not happy but the offer lessens the blow and at least i can give till after xmas to resolve the issue (£125 for BT line not affordable this time of year).

Today i recieved a call from VM tier 2 support ( the call i was promised yesterday).

the guy gave some ramblings about there being a problem at my exchange and some faulty equipment. he said users had been switched to a backup server (likely story) this however was developing faults under the pressure of overuse and expected that to die too, over the next 24-48 hours.

He added he expects there to be no internet service for around a day or two while new parts are fitted to the 'exchange'

Once these new parts are in place and i get my 'broken' service back he will be able to help me further.

Sigh, please help. I really believe im being constantly lied too.

I have the techs name if it helps (BBKing?)

Well at least they ARE going to do something about your problem, i guess that is a start if nothing else, the most positive Ive heard from VM in a long time!

C'mon ECW,

Surely you dont actually think they have moved users from one broken server to a backup one and then expect it too to break down in a day or 2.

This is obviously a stalling issue.

I mean if they had these so-called backup servers why are there scheduled outages when work is carried out on exchanges?

just noticed this in my modem log, looking at the numbers, tonight is not the first time either.

any ideas?

noone think these log entries are a tad unusual?

looks to me like VM are trying to script my modem to bundle 3 which i think is the 20mb XL package, but im already on it. my modem says so.

By the looks of your modem log, VM are tryin to upgrade the firmware, but as there are quite a few different cable modems on the VM network, not every firmware file "fits all" so to speak, Im pretty sure Im right here, I have seen this posted around here previously, so I would guess that would happen until they send the right firmware to your modem :)

:tu:

The modems are locked but still try to get updates, because of this we see errors in the modem logs.

right so its an automatic thing. I think i understand that, however the wording states

SW Upgrade Failed Before Download - Server not Present.

A couple of questions,

A) server not present, looks to me like there is a server missing/crashed that appears to be vital to my service.

B) if its automatic and the server isnt present, how can it try to send the update? or does the modem request it?

sorry but i read your problem as sometimes having 18mb speeds and other times as low as 1.8mb (this is not right but it is normal!!) if your worried about the log then dont be because i have seen qute a few with the same info

as for not workingcorrectly it looks ok for a vm 20mb conx

Id have to disagree,

Define 'normal', because up to around 2 months ago i'd say my service was 'normal'

2 months of 13 with an issue such as this is, in my case, abnormal.

Just because i fall into a problem category with most others here does not mean the service is normal, I think you mean i am suffering the normal problem here.

i fully agree but at this moment in time imo the problems that you are having are happening on a national basis the service techs cannot do anything as the problems are network related witch the company wont admit to so to save myself going around in circles your service is "normal" and will hopefully cure itself the real question everybody should ask is WHEN!!

LOL

GoD im so argumentative at the moment.

I know what ure saying Piggy.

Its just that i did have a PM from someone here giving me lots and lots of infomation regarding the connection i am currently on.

I just posted to see if the issue had been "passed on" to someone who could look into things more officially, as i know this happens here.
