View Full Version : How close am I to losing service ?

My SNR has slowly been dropping over the past few months from 30 to around 25 where it's sat for the past month. The modem connects ok but how much more does it need to drop before I lose my connection, should I be worried ?

*on a side note, I used to get nearly 100% clean downloads from newshosting but now I get a lot of incomplete posts which if I re-download again are complete. Could this be caused by my low SNR or is this a problem with newshosting ?. Does the cable modem either download ok or not download at all ? ie. can it create TCP/IP errors.

TIA,
Dave

I get loads of packetloss when my SNR goes below 30. Speeds become very unstable at that point. I'd get an engineer out if I was getting SNR as low as that.

How can I test packet tloss, tracert or ping ?

I have a blue 250 modem which is much better than my old defunct motorola 3100 which would get major slowdowns with anything less 28db. Downloads still max the line out(450ishkb/s) on the 250.

I'm just worried that if it drops any more I'll have to wait for an engineer ie. downtime, which I don't want. It would be nice for VM to be proactive rather than reactive.

AFAIK, the minimum for the downstream SNR is 24. Any lower than that and your connection will drop.

Thanks Axegrinder.

Just another 0.7db's to go, can't wait!

To who it may concern, THANKYOU

I was remote desktoping home and the line went dead for a minute, reconnected and now my SNR is around 30 and I'm very happy.
