View Full Version : I keep getting throttled before the limit.

I'm currently on 4Mb and somedays I get throttled to 2Mb after downloading a lot less than 700MB.

Is it possible that someone else is using up my limit with something like a clone of my modem?

I'm the only person in the house and the modem is plugged directly into my PC.

whenever I have been throttled on my 4Mb connection it is usually after slightly more than 750MB, so your conjecture may be possible - unusual for cloners to go for 4Mb connections, rather than 20Mb ones, though????

Well I have been up about 10 minutes, switched the modem & stuff on, just done a speedtest from here, and shock horror, for an 'upto' 20Mb connection, this is rubbish, these are the speeds Im getting 24/7:

Thu, 08 Nov 2007 07:05:27 GMT

Test 1: 1024K took 6249 ms = 163.9 KB/sec, approx 1351 Kbps, 1.32 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 7601 ms = 134.7 KB/sec, approx 1110 Kbps, 1.08 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 7380 ms = 138.8 KB/sec, approx 1144 Kbps, 1.12 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 13570 ms = 150.9 KB/sec, approx 1243 Kbps, 1.21 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1212 Kbps, 1.18 Mbps

Calling back a manager today as I was told since Ive been having problems for the 2 years or so, that I can get it all refunded, first recorded problem was on 4th december 2006, so Im due a nice fat refund! Oh and I was told by the manager that if they refused to refund, then the manager would fill out a Triple CS (whatever that is) and also the agent that refuses to refund will get into trouble too, so here's hoping and fingers crossed :) :) :)

Is your upload speed normal? cos if it is, then you have not been throttled because of your download, it is just VM being useless.

Next time I suffer from premature throttling I'll post some test results.

---------- Post added at 18:59 ---------- Previous post was at 18:00 ----------

Happened again I've downloaded 223MB and my results are -

Download Speed: 1996 kbps (249.5 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 184 kbps (23 KB/sec )

I'm going to call Virgin!

Well I tried to call the phone rang for 30 secs clicked and went dead, I suppose I'll get charged 10p for that.

I'm off to BE There, it'll cost me £100+ for a new phone line and £50 for a wireless bridge for my 360 but I've had enough.

Better to post in the newsgroup (virginmedia.support.broadband.cable) as they usually reply quickly and they are free to use.

I've got a thread going in there as I type.

Thanks for the tip. Quick and free.

So i see, too bad you aint getting a good reply from staff on there.

But you wont, as they are pretty useless, and expect alex to jump on the topic before long to put you in the wrong.
