My daughter in university can get 100Mb, so Virgin can't be the fastest! Just take a look at the complaints on this site about their pathetic speed, they are lying through their teeth!

I think someone is going to come down hard on them because the picture saying that speaks louder than the actual words.

I've reported to all that I can think of. why have they put that picture saying they are the fastest only now and not months ago when they were the fastest? they must know about others who supply 24mb and are faster and have been for months.

On the other hand,if her Uni is anything like ours, their network connection is provided by NTL/Telewest business (the business arm of Virgin).

A lad who I play Bf2142 with is at manchester Uni, his ping never goes above 10...ever
I could handle twice that if it was stable, but it's not, far from it :(

I've just come off the server now, and it was awful, bloody awful in fact, I was swearing at the monitor most of the night.

I bet the cost of that is a bit more than £35 pcm though.

I think some brightspark at VM might be using the old *DSL isn't broadband argument :/

Or the fact that (ignoring network congestion), they can provide 20 meg to roughly 52% of the population (the cabled part), which is something no DSL providor can claim (even unbundled).

Well, thats what these guys say.

The majority of 2 and 4Mb customers saw a rise, but us 20Mb-ers only get 38% (7.6Mb) out of 20Mb.

Still, even though there is room for improvement, at least they ARE improving?

I think that rocket in the piccy is the wrong way round actually, that would be a truer reflection of the speeds!

Is that tortoise strapped to the rocket to make the tortoise or the rocket go faster?

Well your daughter will more than likely be connect to the university network which likes in JANET which is probably one of the fastest networks in the UK.

---------- Post added at 08:04 ---------- Previous post was at 08:01 ----------

As for speed claims take into consideration that at present the theoritical max we are getting from the ADSL 2 Guys is 24mb.

I have a friend on the Be There connection and there speed is 23mb (they live right next to the exchange - no loop).

Therefore this claim is false.

Reasons NTL do not claim 20mb service (they advertise as up-to 20mb whereas Be There advertise up-to 24mb - whats better they can tell you your probable speed - rather than virgin oh we dont know)

It would be interesting to see how many people have been upgraded from 10mb where they got full speed, to 20mb and are now getting less than 10mb.

And as such isn't RESIDENTIAL let alone available to non-educational businesses.

May be VM's banner should have said "fastest residential Broadband" ?

i would imagine its beacuse they have just started the billing phase of the 50mb testing. so they are providing the UK's fastest domestic broadband, it doesnt claim that everyone of their customers has the fastest.

A lot of people seem to complain about the bb speed, why dont you use adsl then? unless you know that that would be even worse?

ultimate
07-11-2007, 09:35
Me for one won't linger here for too long, I have my BT line reinstated, bought myself an adsl modem and just looking to see who to sign up with. I have to say VM BB has been very good up to a month ago when evenings and weekends speed is terrible. I have no complaints in any other time. I am just thinking aloud here, are they diverting resources from people like us, in order to prop up the high end of their BB products, or to a certain areas of UK, so that they can claim they are the fastest but sod all to everybidy else?

Of course, Janet will be offer 'faster' connectivity - The majority (educational) rely on this, to host content from internal servers.

Thing is I do get 20Mb, nearly all the time and when I don't the problems are (usually) elsewhere.

Holding a poll on sites like this is pointless as most users who come on here do so because they have issues so the vote tends to be weighted.

Well maybe the rocket propelled tortoise is a good representation of a VM broadband as some subscribers are experiencing it, that is:

Trying to operate an unsuitable platform at unreasonable speeds!

I don't mind advertising for Janet, I wish Janet would come into the residential market to give VM a bit of competition. VM is simply abusing its monopoly of the cable market.

ping is when your computer sends a signal to a remote computer and it reponds by pinging you back, the time taken obviously is shorter the better.

Maybe... but....

According to the latest Which poll of their members, only 27% of VM BB subscribers are very happy with the service.

Got a URL for this or can you post all of the results? How do other ISPs compare with this?

I was on Janet when working for the NHS in early 90's. Limiting factor always the other end.

Which? survey as expected with larger ISP's generally fairing worse than the small. This year VM is above Sky but just below BT and we are not a "Don't buy" now.

It's listed on www.which.co.uk/broadband... though I think you have to be a member to view the actual poll results. I don't think I'm allowed to reproduce them here.

I only looked at the VM results, the others are similar no doubt. No "Best Buy" badge.

Details on that page show no STM or support fee's, so the poll must be before it was introduced. I have asked which to update their VM page to include the new terms.
