Went on the net very slow I'm on 20MB tried 2 test sites ranging from 7Mb to 1.8Mb.
Rang up Virgin guy told me or should I say read to me to empty my internet files n clear me history and restart in safe mode with networking with my modem connected straight to the pc not via the router.
Then he went on to ask me to log onto http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/ then click on simple speed test and wow my speeds show up as infinity yes that's right my internet speed is unmeasurable it defines einstein's theory what joy I thought and praised the man for restoring my faith in virgin.
Well i reconnected my router up and went on the same test site and once again speeds of infinity well call me Mr. Sarcastic but i went on the original test sites I use to try e.g speedtest.net and numion.com and it shows low speeds again now why would that nice man at virgin direct me to http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/? mmmm I wonder surely the words ntlworld ???? and its the only test site that shows infinity speeds who is Robin Walker.

That is because, when Robin Walkers wrote the test, speeds were alot slower. The files downloaded to test your speed is small, and so the speedtest is unable to give an accurate reading.
The test was changed slightly and can be found on the top of this page...or at http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/speed.php.

BTW....Welcome to the site :)

And remember that within the ntlworld network, you are bound to get the top speeds (though infinity is a bit extreme). It's when you go outside the network that the trouble starts. I think VM may be Amish.

Jellybaby is right, but don't knock Robin Walker as his site contains a huge amount of valuable advice for cable broadband users.

Speedtest sites are a notoriously unreliable way to measure download speed, there's loads of advice in these forums about using multi-thread downloads to gain a more accurate result

Robin Walker is a very well respected member of this forum and a very clever person with regards to Cable modems. You would do well to remember that if you need help on here.

it seems strange that a VM tech would direct you to a speedtest site, rather than asking you to download a couple of files from http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/ to test your speed :/

when I was having problems earlier this week i was told by a tech to go to www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/speed.php. went on this site and got speeds of 4.8mb.
It just shows virgin use whatever crafty ways to get out of the fact that none of us are getting 20mb solidly.
You can just see the nerve centre of Virgin Media, "We are getting a massive influx of customers complaining about not getting 20Mb speed how can we make this better? "I know charge them 25p a minute when they call us?"

Im sure Mr Walker is a great bloke and I didnt mean in any way to put him down and dont believe I was when I asked who he was?

ANyway still getting rubbish speeds I'm using a netgear WGR614 v5 firmware V1.0.9_1.0.6 is it worth trying to roleback the firmware ?
