Hi All,

I was wondering if (a n00b) could ask for some help

I've got my PC set on Full duplex 100 connected directly to my Ambit 200 Modem

The SNR all seem reasonable, the Maximum Downstream Data Rate is 20480000, the upload is 768000

I only upgraded to XL yesterday, but the upload speed has 'worked' - so I reliably get ~750kB/s - however, the upload was 3.5MB/s, but now dropping to about 1MB/s

So.... after 19mins on the phone to technical support where's he's trying to walk me through setting my network card to full duplex (again/some more :D) we get cut off.

My question is this... he was still a few hours away from getting me to access the modem - so thanks to this site I've done that & all looks well

What else can I 'do' to check what's wrong.

I'm fairly satisfied that it's not my PC or ethernet cable - so how do I go about proving this to someone else?

Thanks in advance!

Mark

im having similar problems - im sharing the 20mb broadband with another pc in my house via a wired router though both computers are only achieving 1.69mb accordibg to a broadband check ive done - also anytime i watch a youtube video or my housemate streams music on napster it stops halfway through and wont go any further - its infuriating!!

how did you get access to your modem as youve described in your post|?

i upgraded to 20mb a month ago and after several lengthy phon calls to customer care and tech support didi i find out that i wasnt upgraded at all and i was still on 2mb - they are infuriating - one guy got so flustered he was adamant my password was incorresct i find its best to hang up on the muppets and try again until you get someone who talks sonse!!

well best speed i receive now is 10mb which is considerably better than 1.9mb

however im still having streaming probs for youtube and napster ive got a proper wired router for 2 pc;s to share the signal

it seems like its getting jammed whenever streaming live video or music

any ideas?

I'm getting the upstream speed no problem ~750k, but the download is terrible

Take results from speedtests with a pinch of salt.
But that's not to say your speeds are not poor, they may just be not quite as poor as you think.
In NN10, rarely see over 14meg at any time of the day or night, peak times is about 2 to 5 meg, and that's from a known capable source using 30 connections. It's really very bad for a 20meg conx but better than a lot of others seem to get.

im virus, malaware free, file sharing free, defragged, settings optimised, good ram and pcu, router ok etc, so i assume we are in an oversubscribed area.

Do not feel alone this is happening everywhere even here in WA5 and are we are being served by some very old equipment which needs seeing to???????? I am tired of moaning falls on deaf ears at VM who are only keen to blame your kit not there's.

Yeah, I think that must be the case. maybe they'll put some more infrastructure in... then again...

it's a shame, with 4Mb my downloads were quicker, switch to 20Mb and my average drops.

I've got a file I've stuck on my own (good) webserver just to test download speeds - which confirms what the speedtests are telling me

I did all the optimising once I'd found that link, but thanks. frustrating, but at least my upload is good!

just r*ping some linux sites for big DVD size files to confirm it
