Is it possible to find out what ntl: uBR you are on, and if so, how?

It seems Virgin only supply instructions for ex-Telewest users. How do you work it out?

DO you mean the info when you click "connection" at the top menu of this page?

No, what UBR number your on. Which i presume is on that page somewhere.

You need to dissect the host...

cpc1-bahd1-0-0-custXXX.renf.cable.ntl.com

The second section, in my case bahd1, equals Barrhead UBR 1, in the renf area (Renfrew, Glasgow).

If you use http://ab.newnet.co.uk/cgi-bin/traceroute to trace the route back to your IP (enter your IP in the box and hit enter), your UBR will appear as your second-to-last hop, such as;

renf-bahd-ubr-1-ge02.inet.ntl.com

IE, Renfrew, Barrhead, UBR 1

To be fair, this method requires a little local knowledge to extrapolate what the 4 digit codes could refer to!

This should be stickified, would be great for people to go to tech support and say "well, I know x, y and z amount of people in my local area on the same UBR with problems, what you gonna do about it?"

Yeah. But VM technical support, don't ask for your uBR. Thats something they can find out themselves :/

Also, knowing your uBR isn't that much of big deal. Maybe if you're inquisitive, and intrigued :P

You can get it from here as well

http://tools.virginmedia.com/

In the "Your Access Info" bit

The easiest way to find your or anyone else's ubr is to go to command prompt and type>> nslookup [your ip]

you can get your ip by typing ipconfig at command prompt or by going to http://whatismyipaddress.com/

if you are using a router and not direct connection you will either need to use the later option or login into your router and find out the ip address issued by NTL / Virgin Media

if you don't know how to get to command prompt you go to run and type CMD

hope this helps

I think the OP may have found the answer by now, the last reply(until yours) was in november 2007!

Or you just click on the connection button above. One click seems a bit easier to me than those instructions.

Sitting here looking at mine, I'm pondering where abouts in town it actually is. It has to physically live *somewhere*.

It does not matter where the exchange is sited unlike a BT exchange where the closer you are the better the signal.

I think KingDaveRa may have just been curious as to where his UBR is located, I know that I'm mildly curious as to where mine is in Mansfield.

Exactly. Just idle curiosity really. I like to know where things are in my town! The GeoIP info for my IP places me in one of Tesco's car parks! Generally speaking, I know IPs tend to get registered to the location where something big infrastructure-wise is; all of Zen's IPs are registered to Rochdale for example. Putting four and eight and three sixteenths together, and I'd assume it's in that postcode area somewhere.

I expect it was just curiosity, I know where my one is and it is about 5 miles away as the crow flies, so definitely not very local.

The locations aren't made public for security reasons. You wouldn't like it if you lost your connection because someone made off with the UBR.

I know where my one is and if it didn't have a fence around it I would give it a damned good kicking on the way past every day.

And yet, the BT telephone exchanges are sitting there almost with a big sign out the front saying 'HERE IT IS!!!'.

But yeah, it's bound to be some nondescript industrial unit around here somewhere.

Oh well, just curious! :)
