yeah im inclined to do the same after the 12 months contract - its ridiculus that they dont give us the service we are paying for.

Can't you check by using the 'Connection' tab next to the 'Speed Test' tab on the bar at the top of this page?

The connection tab works, and Bagu was very slow yesterday.
I had problems connecting to certain websites, web was painfully slow, and couldnt download from newsgroups.
All seems to be well again this morning though :)

That may not have been a bagu problem, see this (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33622292-cannot-access-non-uk-sites.html) thread...

Yes. Both achieve the same result. IPAlien is by far alot better though, IMHO.

sorry to hear you guys on baguley ubr are having problems the same as us in the ne5 benw ubr, the net has been quite crappy all weekend, i wonder when there going to get around to actually upgrading the ubr's so they can handle the work last time mine was due for an upgrade it got stealth cancelled like a few others yours sounds like its in the same boat.
We might get the normal back before xmas as a early present if they decide to upgrade instead of making there service status page look good then cancelling and not doing jack.
Oh wait this is vm they might do something next year when the 50mb melts the copper to doorstep from cab.

I too am on bagu. The speed is ridiculous. I am on a 4MB connection and am getting just over 1MB. Even just general web browsing is painfully slow. In one selfish respect, i'm glad it's not just me.

What can be done about it?

either leave or do what I did and downgrade to the 2meg service, that way you give them as little money as possible. Before anyone else jumps in and says without my £37 they can't afford the upgrade then don't waste the energy typing it. If they can't deliver I'm not paying (don't even mention the £5 non dd charge!)

baguley ubr

bagu.cable.ntl.com is *not* equivalent to 'Baguley UBR'. Quite apart from anything else, there isn't a 'Baguley UBR', there are now eight. 'bagu.cable.ntl.com' refers to the entire North-West (ex-ntl) region for DHCP and isn't associated with any one piece of networking equipment that could cause a slowdown.

What's more likely (and I get it here, too) is a high upstream utilisation slowing ACK packets, but this is a local issue to your upstream port, which may be one of 24 on your UBR which, as we've seen, is any one of 8 or so on your local site, which is one of 20 in the NW region.

In other words, DNS names are decipherable, but you have to know how:

cpc1-acto2-0-0-cust256.brnt.cable.ntl.com.

Cable Modem connection
PC IP address
Acton hubsite
UBR 2 (of a range allocated to the whole UBR, hence 0-0)
IP #256 in range
Brentford DHCP server
Cable network
Ex-ntl broadband area

Easy, see? Ex-TW ones are less interesting (IMHO)

80-192-1-1.cable.ubr03.edin.blueyonder.co.uk.

IP 80.192.1.1
Cable network
UBR 3
Edinburgh hubsite
ex-blueyonder broadband area

Are they doing anything to solve whatever problems they have and give us some decent speed? Is that it? Are they not doing anything or there isn't anything they can do? Is there a general speed problem in the North West anyway?

They haven't even opened a ticket yet regarding the performance issues many people in the North West seem to be experiencing. As we, the customers are very much unaware of what is happening in the background from a technical perspective it seems to suit VM (as usual) to keep us in the dark.

Decreased speeds are inevitable during peak hours but there are clearly limits to what people are prepared to accept.

1.6Mb!!!! how i dream of such glorious speeds on my 20Mb service....my average speed in the evenings is 0.7Mb sumtimes 0.4Mb....im on the bagu-t2core-b-pos31.inet.ntl.com..which hopefully is the same host you refer to
Now don't laugh but I've written a letter to VM complaining...well...it helped release some of the angst that was nearly causing a coronary lol

i am sort of giving them a little grace due to the post strike..but i did send it recorded so i should be able to find out when they received it....they never bother answering emails so i assume they will apply the same customer service technique of putting their heads in the sand,.... still, not much choice here...prob only get less than 2Mb if i swapped to bb over phone line so i guess its grin and bear it....maybe VM will figure out the problems....stranger things happen

As speedtests are notoriously unreliable here are a couple of sites you can download files from to form a general picture of your download speeds:

Anybody know the address to write to the top people?

I had this address for the Managing Director when it was NTL, but it was some time ago.

No problems here (Runcorn) was d/l at between 18-20 meg this morning. Has now dropped to between 3-5 meg as the STM has kicked in. Had no problems since the changeover apart from erratic speeds for the first few days.
