So while im stuck on IRC or just faffing about, I have always wondered when we are going to get an IP address name thing changed..

Its all pretty having a cust666.renf.cable.ntl.com address, but isnt it high time we got something like renf.virginmedia.net or whatever?

Just curious, not looking for a forum argument. :P

And the point in that would be? And by the way its called a "Hostname"

cos it looks nice to have a reverse dns lookup that say VM i suppose, personally i dont see why small things like that need changing or are brought up, it doesnt affect the connection or anything

When the two NTL networks and Telewest's network are fully merged. In other words - no time soon!

I think the plan is to keep the 3 networks in place but roll out any changes on all 3 simultaneously, so to customers it'll seem like it's the same wherever. Stuff like the hostname is not likely to change.

Exactly, plus for the work involved in actually making those changes..... there just really wouldn't be any tangible 'point'.

No reason to and no need to either.

Probably in the list of things to do once all the infrastructure hostnames have been changed.

It's not that much work pooper it can be done with a script, a common hostname format has to be agreed first of course!

i bet you could run a pretty quickly coded script to do the work for you ;)

besides if it took so long, why did they change all the routers etc?
