IIm on virgin media (bloody hate it) on the 8mb service (NOT CABLE but ADSl) And Today every Uk gaming server I have tried to connect to has had a 190 more ping. WTF is up with that. Anyone know why the pings are so high. Its everything as well. Anyone know why virgin has such awful pings?

Not really.

Have you done a tracert to the bbc site to see where the delay is?

Knock the attitude off - I'm trying to help you here. I was showing you mine so you could compare and work out where the issue is.

Forget it, with an attitude like that you can ask someone else to help.

I would, but my routers pretty secure, and its a static ip anyways.

I've edited your IP out. Generally, regardless of how secure you think you are, it's best not to go out of your way to help people test that.

Also, if someone is trying to help, it's not usually a good idea to give them attitude.

n0c0ntr0l
07-10-2007, 16:09
Anyway's guess this means that for some reason I'm being capped by virgin again. Looks like their Customer Service is about to recieve 1 more angry customer.

Stuart
07-10-2007, 16:16
Capping wouldn't affect pings. Have you had Virgin get BT to look at your line?

homealone
07-10-2007, 16:23
the 'cap' has nothing to do with pings, the fact you show high pings from your router onwards indicates a local problem, possibly the modem.

Why do you have to be 'angry', when you phone, calm & focused on the problem would get a better response, in my experience ....

n0c0ntr0l
07-10-2007, 17:43
I'll see what I can do. It's a bit strange that pinging me doesn't lead to 220ms whilst me pinging anyone else is around that region. I'll definately get it looked into by BT.

EDIT

Just discovered something very worrying. My router is connecting to a base station in MANCHESTER, and I am in BERKSHIRE. Any ideas whats going on?

Just discovered something very worrying. My router is connecting to a base station in MANCHESTER, and I am in BERKSHIRE. Any ideas whats going on?

Looking at the hostnames, it looks like you're hitting the "NTL" network at Watford which is a little closer to you than Manchester. It does look to be an issue between you and the first hop in the "NTL" network, which points to exchange contention/over-subscription (since you're ADSL). Have a look here (http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/) and check if your exchange has any capacity issues. (I've not used that for over a year since I'm on cable, so I'm not sure how up to date they keep it, if at all).

2 198 ms * 207 ms watf-bam-1.inet.ntl.com [194.145.148.xx]

Your problem starts from your own router mate. It's connecting rather sluggishly to the exchange near you, which could indeed mean either that your router is configured drastically wrong, or that the exchange is dead, or your line is bad quality. Gimme a min to check something...

EDIT:

Okay,. ran virtually the same test as you, while mine is configured for 20Mb ADSL, well, 16Mb, going upto 24... But still, look at my values and compare them to yours... (Oh, and this is the highest MTU i can run without fragmented packets... So that's nothig to worry about)

TCP options string = 020405850103030401010402
MTU = 1453
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput. If you are using a router, it could be limiting your MTU regardless of Registry settings.
MSS = 1413
MSS is not optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU value.
Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 1039968
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 4 bits (scale factor of 8)
Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 64998

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
519984 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 8)
259992 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4)
129996 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2)
64998 (MSS x 46)
bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your TCP Window limits you to: 41599 kbps (5200 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your TCP Window limits you to: 16639 kbps (2080 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 40 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000 (0)

Its still hasn't improved. i beginning to think that it might be dodgy wiring. I'll look into it some more, but is the first hop the actual Ip address of my router because the ip tests always say otherwise.

Hugh
09-10-2007, 21:17
What do you get on a tracert if you take the router out of the equation (link direct to the Modem/STB)?

n0c0ntr0l
09-10-2007, 21:22
Bit unclear, do i plug the modem straight into the pc? if so how do i connect? Is it plug and play.

Hugh
09-10-2007, 21:27
Power off the PC and the modem.
Connect the modem and the PC.
Power up the modem, let the lights settle down.
Power up the PC.

That should be it.

Then try a tracert.

n0c0ntr0l
09-10-2007, 21:40
There is no modem, its just a a cable connected to the telephone box, this cable the goes through some sort of contraption, one with a modem like cable (that my modem on the pc does not notice) and one for the telephone. When plugged in it does not detect it, on all three pcs.

Detailed Description
Our engineers will be undertaking maintenance work in the Reading area.
Customer Impact
The work will result in a loss of services for our broadband customers between the hours of 12am and 4am.This work will also affect any Video on Demand purchases during these times. For those customers who are aware of which one of our uBRs (routers) they connect to, this will affect customers on UBR1, 13 and 9 in Reading.Virgin Media apologises for any inconvenience caused.

And aslo worth noting. I chose a second router and got the same ping times.

If it's like most ADSL services it'll be a combined router and modem. :)
