View Full Version : Internet problems - Portsmouth area

For the past couple of days I've been having some technical problems. Sometimes I connect fine for a random length, then it just stops loading any pages, and when I check my LAN setting my IP address has always changed. In fact the starting digits are three characters long. 'Repair' does squat too. It reconnects me whenever it pleases, or so it seems.

Thanks.

Had problems for the past few days accessing a particular website.
DNS, slow response, being dropped whilst using the site - all happening.

Same problem reported by other NTL/Virgin users of the site but not, apparently, other ISP users.

It's been suggested that it could be a routing issue to the server.
I'm in the Portsmouth area.

Can anyone comment?

Thx busboy, but it's just one site I have problems with.
I've accessed dozens of others today with no probs.

That one site has recorded a problem for several NTL/Virgin users but for no users with other ISPs.

Another one in Portsmouth with problems. Been really patchy all day but about 10 minutes ago whilst playing world of warcraft latency has fallen through the floor and rapidly making its way to the centre of the earth. Rebooted my modem three times and it took about 5 mins to bring back each time to ready.

I am in Portsmouth and have similar problems. Cannot open many web pages and other just time out. Sometimes they load if you persist.

Unfortunately there is no longer any way to report faults to Virgin. If you call faults they will tell you to call the premium rate tech support number, which means you then have to waste your time trying to convince them it's not a problem with your PC etc. On Sunday you will probably only be able to get some script monkey in India anyway.

I'm in Portsmouth, same thing here, speed slowed to a crawl, can't even get through to some sites. Maybe they're over-subscribed, I know I've had problems on Sundays in the past, seems to be a peak time. Pointless complaining,it'll cost an arm and a leg to be told that everything is fine at their end.

From the sublime to the rediculous- just rebooted my modem and its taken 20 minutes to connect "properly" and now its a crawl to anything. Can anyone get to the service status page because I cannot get it to load at all and see if anything is logged aabout our area?

Back to normal now.

The service cut off completely last night, I couldn't get on at all after 7.00pm. And I couldn't even report the fault, evn if you want to pay through the nose for their support line apparently Virgin are 'migrating' the service and it won't be functional until October 6th.

What's the odds that they're migrating to a separate company for support who will charge us even more?

Well my internet went completely on Thursday, and I've only just had it fixed. Apparently the 'thingymajig' inside the NTL box had fused out. He asked if we've had a power cut recently, but we haven't. Hopefully it'll be alright now he's replaced it.

Im having limited website access in the winchester area. some websites just wont load. all the main stuff works - google, bbc, this forum, but loads of other sites just time out.
take for example: thetrainline.com - wont load!

also i notice on bittorrent that i can only connect to tiny numbers of the available peers/seeds out there. (i havent been running BT overly...)

course i tried calling their support line, 25p a minute to be told to delete my cookies ???? wtf? idiots.

I explained; i have many computers, all of them experience the same problem..
hes like click start, click run, now type charlie mike delta, now you should have a black box type india papa....
I interject, "ipconfig"
support:yes
me: im behind a router. you wont get the IP from that
support: thats the problem then, connect directly to your modem.
me: its not the router.
supprt: call back when youve done it
when i did he told me all he could do it help with browser settings!!!!
me: can you open a ticket and investigate?
support: there isnt a problem here (!!!)

----
ok so now youre as frustrated as me, does anyone else have this trouble?

its not surprising people arent reporting problems - its going to cost you about £5 just to get past the disclaimers, only to be told its your browser settings!

bah! help anyone?

:welcome: to the forum TheHatmaker, You can always try changing your dns servers to www.opendns.com , that should help with sites not loading.

The best thing to do is lie. Just tell them you are directly connected. Give them your external IP address when they ask you to run ipconfig. Walk them through their script until they give up and you get to someone with a brain. Sadly it's the only way.

Ok thanks very much for that. im on opendns now. i was all hopeful and misty eyed for a minute. alas problem remains.

so issue: limited access to internet, also my STEAM account cannot connect.
timeframe: about the last week
no cable TV or Phone from ntl
contacted customer support (I cannot imagine that they solve very many problems with their approach!)
ive tried TCPOptimiser, disable firewall (comodo pro) and the suggested openDNS (thing is my settings have been constant before and after fault)
in the UK, central hampshire
running XP SP2 fully patched up
modem is ntlhome200, followed by WGT624 (which was rubbish until i modified it; adding a large custom heatsink and mounted it sideways with the case sides removed)
im on a patch cable, upto two laptops and another desk on wireless
traceroute to bbc (which connects fine in browser)

Could it be that your are not using an ICMP ping for the trace and the BBC is dropping your requests?

Both my systems are using the VM DNS servers at 194.168.8.100 and 194.168.4.100, BTW.

I can connect to any of the blocked internet sites if I use a free proxy or anonymiser site. So I know that it is ntls server's that are having trouble with the requests, and not some generalised problem with the interwebs (as if)
Its almost like ntl are constructing some sort of "prison garden" system, vetting my choices in advance. then again im given to paranoia.

TheHatmaker, try using webcache.virginmedia.com port 8080, as a proxy, it shouldn't be a long term solution, but again, it may help.

Hugh

hatmaker and mojo, you appear to be giving out your IP addresses on an open forum - if you can't edit them, you may wish to pm a mod to ask them to do it for you.

mojo
06-10-2007, 21:16
I can't edit it now but I don't see it's a major problem. I changed IP address just now anyway, but what does it matter if my IP is associated with a user name I only use on this forum and nowhere else?

TheHatmaker
06-10-2007, 21:22
I did PM a mod to get it masked. feel a little guilty about taking up someones time with lame requests though... (I included you in request mojo btw) so sorry mod!
the proxy workaround is good enough for websites, gutted about steam tho... need my CS:S hit!

Hugh
06-10-2007, 21:41
erm, your IP address is associated with your PC/router, not your username - if you give your IP address out on a public forum, you give potential Internet crackers all the time they need to search for access to your computer, or even use your IP address in IP address spoofing.
