I did that once with a pair of All Stars. It didn't damage the washing machine, but it did make a hell of a lot of noise. :)

Nope,especially if you put them in a pillow case to begin with and tie the end of it ;)

I'd never wash leather trainers tho, cos they'll crack and end up looking awful :)

I've heard of the door getting broken.

Clean the outside of them by hand and buy a pair of odour eaters if the insides pong a bit!

Though probably best not to use it as a floatation device, and a form of heating at the same time though...
