Your profile says 10 meg. Are you 10 meg or 20 meg. I was under the impression that VM had finished the roll out of 20 meg.

Hope you get better service from BT-Sky

How many times does it take to tell people that HTTP speed test sites are crap and dont work.

In other words which one of the above would you trust ???????

Let us know how good Sky and BT are when you get there ? :wavey:

How many times does it take to tell people that HTTP speed test sites are crap and dont work.

Here here: +1
No matter how s**t my speeds have been the various download tests i`ve used have usually always given 30-50% faster results than any of the speedtests out there.

The one on here will usually provide better results than the likes of speedtest.net of course but checking download speeds from VM etc(no newgroup dl`ing here) will give still better results 99.99% of the time.

The one exception to this rule.....for us, was the two week period after the new VM255 modem arrived. Our actual speeds went from the 4-12Mb we had been getting with the NTL120 down to 1-4Mb most of the time.:erm:
It was like that for about 2 weeks before the 20Mb suddenly decided to make it`s appearance.3 months 2 weeks after being upgraded.(edit)The speedtests then were quite often showing faster than the DL`s.

I had been ready to call up....again,and have the 120 fired back up:rolleyes:

At the moment though i`m getting 5Mb-ish on the London speedtest.net server,7Mb-ish on this speedtest here but downloading from VM at about 11MB.

Nowhere near the 20Mb of course but still:)

we have been through this before, and what speeds do you see downloading for instance
ftp://gentoo.virginmedia.com/mirrors/gentoo/experimental/x86/freebsd/stages/stage3-x86-freebsd-6.2-r1.tar.bz2

or any of the other larger files here on the internal VM network

saying that though, i think wilmslow is well served with xADSL so your options for other ISPs seem good, doesnt wilmslow also have a wireless ISP option today.

slow ,hardly, Mr A's 29.3kbit is super slow, your 998 KByte and 1.2 MByte are close to top speeds.

as already said, VM still need to look at the internal ftp/web server configurations as they should be supplying and are capable of topping out their internal VM users download rates.

but still, you seem to have by far the better speed atm, and your speedtst.net report also showed that you were getting 717kbit upload rates and that is about right for the 20Mbit/768kbit,so again, if you want better upload rates your options are Be* with their ADSL2+ anexM 1.3Mbit or 2.5.Mbit upload rates.

i was getting 170KByte on that file above for instance.

yeah, sure, but you just proved that the connection from your modem to your ubr to the internal ftp servers are giving you good speeds.

the fact it goes crumby after that is another problem all together.

are the VM DNS servers playing up, 194.168.4.100 and 194.168.8.100 ?, or are the (virtual)web servers your trying to get to outside the VM network got problems today?.

My area has been the crappiest crap area that there could be. I sent complaints to the executive office and complaining by letter, Email and any other option i had seems to have paid off :). At one point not more than a month ago i had sub dial up speeds

I decided to stick with cable because when it works it works bloody well and i have no intention of giving my money to BT and the devil that is Murdock.

So if you are having bad speeds do something about it and contact VM or Move. Complaining just on this site will get you no where, YOU have to go that extra mile and make you self heard by the right people at VM and if that means them at the top in there ivory tower then SO BE IT.

Note that before i sent a letter i had allowed Vms engineers to come out and check. I had registered faults with faults. What i am saying is if you have not allowed vm the chance to fix it first by the normal route then how can you complain to the top.

Only and only after i had exhausted the normal route did i go to the top. It is to easy just to shout at the top man and not do the right thing first and give them a chance to fix the problem.

Have you had a engineer out yet, Have you spoken to tech support yet. Have the Engineers that came out if you have had a service engineer engaged Network engineers yet, the list goes on.

How do you do a proper speed test without the usual these results appear to be rather fast reappearing?

Thanks
