View Full Version : Should congestion lead to this kind of speed?

Speed Down 1852.32 Kbps ( 1.8 Mbps )
Speed Up 475.93 Kbps ( 0.5 Mbps )
Port 8095
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk

Note the time. Im on 4megabit bb and im getting this speed at 20 to 4. Sure all the kids have probably come home from school and straight on the internet but i dont think you should be able to sell a 4megabit bb line and give out these kinds of speeds.

and now a four o'clock,
Date 20/09/07 15:59:30
Speed Down 9581.64 Kbps ( 9.4 Mbps )
Speed Up 474.77 Kbps ( 0.5 Mbps )
Port 8095
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk

vm is just so unstable its not funny.

Speedtests aren't a reliable guide, try downloading a big file from a good server (such as Flight Sim X from Microsoft) and see what your average speed is.

As suggested in the first response, never trust speedtest sites.

However, there are some other anomolies in the data you have posted.

If I read you correctly, you suggest you are on the 4 Mb services (L). The upload speed you say you are getting is beyond the L upload maximum which is 384 Kb. You are also suggesting you are , at times, getting above the L download maximum which is 4 Mb.

Are you sure you are on the L and not the XL service?

Speed Down 9581.64 Kbps ( 9.4 Mbps ) is impossible on 4Mbps. You are on 20Mbps.

Same problem here, my speed always drops to around 0.3 meg after 6 - 7 PM then after 1am goes back up to 18 Meg... Hope to be canceling soon and switching to BE online.

Ive been told that my UBR is oversubscribed but not eta on fix could be months...

well it seems i now receive upto 10mbit intermittently. however, its hardly worth it if half the time its not even downloading websites at an acceptable speed. now for instance its taking upto a minute. the speed fluctuates wildly. i never know what im going to get. or what ill get when i need it.

Date 20/09/07 22:43:46
Speed Down 2349.02 Kbps ( 2.3 Mbps )
Speed Up 119.20 Kbps ( 0.1 Mbps )

go to http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com and download some test files what speed do you get. This site is hosted by Virginmedia and will give a true indication of your download speed. Forget speedtest its on another network and if you do ring up to complain of slow speeds they'll only refer to gamefiles anyway ,try it and tel us what the transfer rate is..

umm.. yeah the speed test i just did is a little slower but its ridiculous really.

Date 21/09/07 00:10:43
Speed Down 1800.01 Kbps ( 1.8 Mbps )
Speed Up 116.24 Kbps ( 0.1 Mbps )
Port 8095
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk

the game file downloaded at 290kbs

so im still out by over 100kbps. i bet the traffic management has driven people to just outside the borders and its causing bad conjestion. basically today my internet has just been terrible. im starting a new thread regarding cancellations.

You should be seeing around 450KBs on virginmedia.gamefiles. Do you know if youve reached your download limit. It could be that traffic management has kicked in. Use gamefiles as your reference because as I said if you ring up with slow speeds then thats were you will be reffered to in order to verify your speed. Any other speed test is irrelavent. Are you DSL (cable) or ADSL (virgin.net).

These speeds............................................ .................................................. .......

Date 20/09/07 15:59:30
Speed Down 9581.64 Kbps ( 9.4 Mbps )
Speed Up 474.77 Kbps ( 0.5 Mbps )
Port 8095
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk

do not indicate a 4Meg connection. You must be on XL. Are you ex NTL or Ex Telewest.

Type into your browser address bar the followng IP address 192.168.100.1 Press enter and it will bring up the modem config pages click on signal and tell me what the downstream bitrate is.

Also go here http://tools.virginmedia.com/ scroll down on the page and tell me what ubr you are connected to. should look some thing like this 194-54.cable.ubr10.live.blueyonder.co.uk

yes, no, well i found out from someone on these forums that they were doing tests on upgrading the 4mbit to 10 here in blackpool. and the information from the modem corroborates

10240000 bits/sec

Client Host Name: 80-192-176-13.cable.ubr03.blac.blueyonder.co.uk

its not the maxim speed im bothered about. its that it never gets there during reasonable hours because it just seems to be too conjested. it takes simple websites 30 - 50 seconds to load sometimes. unnacceptable at any time of the day.

unnacceptable at any time of the day.
If that is your true opinion then you have no choice but to go and see if the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. You may find that you have gone from the frying pan into the fire however.

sure. please see my other thread about cancellation if you have any advice about what to do after all avenues of support are exhausted, and i have to cancel my contract but vm would like to keep me legally bound.

PM me your modem MAC address, I'll tell you if its "congestion" or not.

You may want to check with the CF staff to check if its safe to give me your details.
And it is BTW :)

Also go back into the modem conig pages click signal and post Your Upstream and Downstream power levels and the downstream SNR (signal to noise).Your downstream frequency should be either 331 and six zeros or 339 and six zeros please confirm.Checked status page and theres are no faults listed. If you know how, you can contact Virgin support via virginmedia.announce.internet newsgroup tell them what ubr your connected to ie UBR03Blac.Hope this helps
