Very frequently, sometimes two or three times a day, I get a computer provisioning page appear, I have to re-register my PC and then reboot, This is very time consuming.
I have looked at my IP address and it whenever I get this problem it starts with 10.2.xxx.xx when it is working fine my IP address starts 82.18.x.xx
How can I stop this happening??

this would occur if the MAC address of your NIC card was changing.

Are you changing your MAC address for any reason?

I am not changing anything as far as I know, I am connected and the IP address is 82.10xxxxxx then it changes to 10xxxxxx and I am unable to view any websites, I can use ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew and it will sometimes give me an alternative working IP address???

Are you using an STB or a stand alone modem?

when i get the computer provisioning page, i can login, remove my pc name, add a new name then reboot, and i get a new IP address, i have since found using Ipconfig/release, renew avoids having to do this

What type of box is it .
Do you have 3 lights next to the Channel numbers on the front of the box.
Does the centre light stay on for a while and then start flashing when this problem occurs.

it is a silver Samsung STB smt2100c
It has one light above the numbers and it stays on constantly without flashing??

it sounds like you are not getting your DHCP lease updated, properly, reasons for this could include firewall settings being too 'tight' or a router setting - do either of those apply, polly1234?

I have tried with no firewall and still is the same and am not using a router! so i do not think any of those suggestions - ???

when you say tried with no firewall, was it zonealarm, by any chance - I have heard rumours that turning it off requires a full uninstall, otherwise some registry entries can get left behind?

- please note I am not recommending you do not use a firewall, just letting you know that zonealarm can, sometimes, be hard to completely remove ;)

I use Norton Firewall not zonealarm, I tried switching it off and it did not solve the problem

This is a known problem with some set top box accounts,it may be worth contacting customer services and request a stand alone cable modem to supply your broadband instead of the stb.

Hi Maverick, Thanks for the advice, I have been using this STB for over a year and no problems until about 3 weeks ago, will try customer services and request a stand alone modem.

Hey, I have the same problem!

I'm a long-standing ex-NTL customer in RM10 with 1Mb (as if!) broadband via the STB. I had a PACE box connected to a Belkin router with several PC's on it for years with no difficulty. Virgin replaced this box with a new Samsung one (I didn't request this!) which buggered up our connection for weeks. Everybody denied everything, no matter who you asked, till they eventually admitted that their system was at fault (like I told them immediately after they connected the thing) and they'd had me down as no service. But it was working OK for a while.

Now it comes up with the provisioning screen, and I have to remove the registered machine and re-register it (can't add one, as it's the router it sees, which is plainly still there and still the same machine, still with the same MAC address) and go through the whole palaver of switching everything off. Then maybe it'll work for a while, and maybe it won't, and then it'll stop again the next day, or in a day or two.

I turned my firewall off altogether (which does not make me happy) on my PC, but the Belkin has one of it's own that I can't turn off (mind you, that's been fine for the last 5 years or more!), and I'm now wondering what there is installed on the works laptop - maybe that's doing it...

Hmm... the Belkin router gives me a firewall report from after yesterday's reboot like this :

After some research, I can't see anything firewall-y that wasn't there before!

Does anyone know if VM have suddenly changed how they figure out whether a connection needs reprovisioning, or does this new Samsung STB do something different to the old PACE one or anything?

I tried a new firewall and it worked fine for a few days I am now having the same problem, I get an 82xxxxxx IP address and all works fine, then suddenly it drops and I get a 10xxxxxxx IP address, I can reset my IP address using the CMD Prompt, IPCONFIG /release - then IPCONFIG /renew sometimes this can take a while though! I have tried various suggestions and now think it must be the STB, will call VM and request a new one!

It is more to do with the way the connection works through a set top box,you may be better off requesting a swap to a cable modem.
1. it will be faster and more stable.
2.you will not get the 10 ip issue.

Mmm, that's what I'm gonna do. They should deliver it some time this week...
