You maybe a victim of the traffic management.

4meg users get slowed to 2meg if over 750mb has been downloaded.

You got to love that traffic managent  I just love going to slow speed jobs where all the levels are ok with the modem but they insist on sending us out .I have not got my magic wand yet to fix these sorry :D

is there any thing that i can do about it?? if i ask them if this is what they are doing will they admit it ??

Nedkelly
30-08-2007, 22:25
you can try  i get sent on loads of these jobs .The customer has a new modem the levels are fine upstream and downstream .Ok when cheked with a rf meter .Theres not a lot a tech can do if all of the above is fine .They need to look at the ubr figures to see what status it is at .But they will want to send a tech

Do 20meg lines get "traffic management" if they go over an amount?

Nedkelly

Yes all the teirs are traffic managed :td:

Test 1: 1024K took 1072 ms = 955.2 KB/sec, approx 7871 Kbps, 7.69 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 1777 ms = 576.3 KB/sec, approx 4749 Kbps, 4.64 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 1619 ms = 632.5 KB/sec, approx 5212 Kbps, 5.09 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 3924 ms = 521.9 KB/sec, approx 4300 Kbps, 4.2 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 5533 Kbps, 5.41 Mbps

With NO downloading done today, this is crap for £37 pm.

Close, actually 5 meg, after going over 3 gig.

Close, actually 5 meg, after going over 3 gig.

and when is it reset, so you can get the full speed again.

I just posted on the forum about my super speeds all day and BANG! i am down to 5-6 meg lol ( like 5 mins after the post :erm: )

So is it a day by day thing?

and what is the FUP (I never did read the small print on that)

...snip...and what is the FUP (I never did read the small print on that)
Try :dozey: - RTFM
Traffic Management (http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html)
Broadband Size: XL
During peak times, the top 5% on the Size: XL package download at least 3GB of traffic each.
Any users hitting this amount during peak times (4pm till midnight) will have their broadband speed temporarily traffic managed – their download speed will be set to 5Mb, with their upload speed set to 256Kb. This will last for 4 hours from when the traffic management policy is applied.
Even if a Broadband Size: XL user has their speed temporarily traffic managed, they can still download over 4,000 music files per day.

I agree with the FUP, but this was my first day on 20meg, so I just went a big mad today.

I love the way the website says "Even if a Broadband Size: XL user has their speed temporarily traffic managed, they can still download over 4,000 music files per day" lol they equate everything to downloading music tracks, who the hell downloads 4,000 music tracks per day!

I would still love to download 1 music track at 20meg, than 4,000 tracks at 5meg.

Anything but fair. The limits are so low it's a disgrace... A good way to sell your already paid for bandwidth again though.

I am on the 2mb. I was getting results like this when I was on 4mb. No downloading files, nowhere near the capping limit and this is usual for me :erm:

i have recently found my speed reduced in the evenings. i wouldn't say i have ever misused the service. i only have a 2mb connection anyway.

they say that if you download 340mb of data or over on a 2mb connection, you will be capped for 4 hours. is this just me or is this limit ridiculously low?

i use my connection not only for my PC you see --i have an xbox 360 and a playstation 3 as well. now since the introduction of HDTV and the fact that movies and console games are now outputting at HD resolutions, the size of media files you download are getting increasingly higher. a couple of HD game trailers downloaded from xbox live will reach my limit easily, not to mention the fact that game demos are as high as 1 gig in size these days. downloading half of 1 demo would reach my limit.

in america they have that download service on xbox live that allows you to rent HD movies or tv shows. this same service will be coming to europe in the future. one HD movie can be bigger than 6 gig in size and this sort of thing is only getting bigger now. there are currently over 13 million people that use steam i read somewhere. they allow you to buy and download the latest PC games. digital distribution of media and games, including HD quality media is starting to really take-off now. also, internet tv is being streamed at higher quality and is only set to get better as the connection speeds increase. using your internet connection for media and entertainment is demanding higher bandwidth and connection speeds every year now.

what annoys me the most is the way they claim they are doing us all a good service, but in reality, the truth is their network can't cope with the new 20mb service and people raping the **** out of it.

IMO 2mb users should not be capped. the problem doesn't really lie with them i don't think and if they continue to uphold this policy, they should at least increase the download limit considerably, as 340mb cap is really taking the ****. the way i use my connection insures that i reach the cap pretty much everyday and i am now effectively using a 1mb connection when it should be 2mbps. there really is something wrong when downloading a couple of trailers on xbox live comes with the penalty of being limited for the rest of the night. how is that fair?

this policy is severely limiting customers in what they can do on the internet in the future which certainly isn't providing virgin customers with a good service.

i had just tried my old laptop connected via a 56k modem into telephone line and it was quicker at loading pages than my super-speed 20mb vm bb it loaded 20 pages in 11.3 mins where the 56k modem did the same pages in 8.7 mins How crap is that!!! but i have got a tech coming next sat so i'm hoping it will all be better then

My speed is all over the place this evening, going from 2.2 meg down to 300k. Then all the way back up, then down, then up etc etc.

I wanted to go on xbox live but I reckon I'll get terrible lag with such random speeds. The speed variation is using the newsgroups as well, which usually give a nice stable speed while grabbing something.

Oh and I was grabbing a couple of TV shows maxing out at maybe 1.2 gig so it's not that I'm being capped.

Just as things were looking up with regards my connection as well :(

I think it's a GMT/BST thing or so I've heard, somehow I haven't been waylaid by STM yet. :)

Probably nothing to do with STM, every 3 or 4 days my speed is 2 - 5Mb all day long, then it's back up to normal for a few days, regular as clockwork. I think they are just sharing out the bandwidth, sharing is good

Funny thing actually, i was telling a technician who came round yesterday to replace my box that i was getting capped or w.e you wish to call it. And he said it shouldnt be happening :S.
