Speed tests vary in their accuracy, have you tried a different speed test?
just run these, the first is from a site vm told me to use when i rang them on 14/07/07 to complain

The dawn of realisation...
CableForum has a speed test - go right to the top of this page its in the middle of the first blue bar above "Todays Posts"
Might want to give a little more information as to the connection, are you on ethernet straight to modem or are you running a router? What operating system etc?
heres paul marsdens test, idint use before because its been v slow to respond last few weeks

i dont use it a wirless but have my 2 comps connected by cable to router, and cable from router to modem (for approx a year)
comp is clean from spyware (use adaware and spybot regular)
never had any p2p software.

Try connecting the modem directly to the pc, power cycling them both, then test again.
Edit: Just out of curiosity, do you have the ntl:home 100 modem?? its the flat silver box one.
yes i got ntl 100 :(
and yes i have ordered a replacement (1 week ago)
i will try modem direct, i tried yesterday as my speeds have been averaging dial up for the last 4 weeks but it made no diff, but i give it another go

my speed always peaks just after modem re boot then tails off to sub 1mb
just in case it makes any diff, i also have tv, got a 3 way splitter balanced, 5-1000 mhz, 6.2 db fitted by vm tv guys.
modem signal lvls
Downstream Receive Power Level : -0.68 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 29.17 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 55.00 dBmv
I had those speed results when I got my new ambit 255 modem, reboot a few times and leave plugged in for a couple of hours.

Your Downstream SNR is low and your Upstream Power is a little high, do you have any problems with the connection dropping ie, modem sync light flashing?

dont know about sync light flashing as i cant see modem from my desk.
i havent suffered from connection dropping if u mean losing connection, its just my speeds in the last 4-5 weeks have been soo low its been like dial up.
heres a log ive been taking off a site vm guy told me to use when i was basically told "its network problems, wait until upgrade finished then ring cs for refund , etc"

Has this speed drop only happened since the 20 meg upgrade?
Has this speed drop only happened since the 20 meg upgrade?
no, been pants since 7th july.
even when it was "good" i averaged 2.6mb on the 4mb service and for the 10mb service i was only managing an average of 4.6mb when i had a stable connection.

The way i see it you have 2 options, Either wait for the new modem to arrive and hope that sorts it, or give tech support a ring and hope they can help sort it out.

looks like its wait for the new modem to arrive.
i just rang the tech support in india :
i told them i've been getting dial type speeds on the 10mb service for most of the last 5 weeks.
told them my modem configuration now shows im on the 20mb service but still getting d/l of
Download Speed: 238 kbps (29.8 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 510 kbps (63.8 KB/sec ) @ 19.06hrs
she asked me what modem i got, i said ntl 100, she tells me it wont support 20mb, i said i know it supports up to 10mb but shouldnt i get up to 10mb ?
she repeats what she just said, so do i.
she tells me to wait for new modem (one more week i hope)
end of techinal support call .

i hope your new modem sorts it (when u get it!).
i hope your new modem sorts it (when u get it!).
guess what ?
today was the 14 day since i recieved an e-mail from the virgin web team confirming my modem order, the postman has been and no modem.
to add insult to injury, the e-mail tells me to ring an 0845 number, k-ching.
so i rang 150 instead (wonder how long that will last ?).
guy i spoke to says he cant find any record of modem order even with the ref number supplied.
so now i got to hope the engineer will remeber to drop it off this saturday afternoon.
until then i will have to keep putting up with this

i know, i'm being ungratefull, afterall they have been good enough to give me enough speed to post and moan on the forum and i realise richard (i prefer to call him DICK) needs every penny he can get (maintaining your own private island doesnt come cheap).

just over 60% of my "up to 20mb" service.
when i was on the 4mb service i would average 2.6, around 60%.
wonder if my area i oversubcribed ?
anyway, tuesday i will be asking how cs is going to compensate me for the last 6 weeks of .5mb speeds or lower .

you can always try this program to optimise your connection.
http://www.speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe
also there is a page on the vm website to further help with slow speeds
http://www.virginmedia.com/help/20mb-broadband-optimisation.php
thanks for the info, but i have done all that before i did the speed test
