And if you check this site you'll find plenty of threads on the subject too. It's called traffic shaping ;)

A 2.5mb connection - that's an odd speed  I thought it was 2 or 4 meg. Worth noting that you only get shaped if you are doing a lot of donwloading.

Could the OP be on a Virgin ADSL connection rather than cable

its so Virginmedia can pretend to give out 20mb.

its also worth noting that if you are a download monster, simply scheduling your downloads outside of the peak hours and using some monitoring software should result in no traffic shaping and hopefully a more stable network for all of us.

allthough my bb service with vm is a bag of dog doo doo at the moment, for you to say virgin is "stealing your broadband connection" is misleading and inaccurate, mind you, vm using the term unlimited without giving equal prominence to their traffic shaping is just as bad.

there is the argument that maybe people who want a true "unlimted" service should be offered this service at an additional cost, after all, why should an average user be charged the same as somebody who downloads ten times as much ?

Pretend? Hmm. My 20Mb connection has been running fine since the upgrade. No pretend 20Mb here.

There's no 2.5Mb option on the ADSL service either.

It's unlimited downloads, not unlimited speed. Don't think VM have ever claimed unlimited speed

hmmm i can find the adverts if i have too

but they claim unlimited

then claim fast no matter how far you are from exchange

then claim no download limits so you can download those tunes movies etc

then no hidden costs

then if you download a load of terms and conditions then follow them to aup in very small print you find they may do this it doesnt ( or didnt when i last looked ) say that they will

ps
seems asa agrees with us too ;)

Maybe that's why I keep getting disconnected. I downloaded knoppix a few days back and they are making sure I can't download that much again without switching my modem on and off at least 6 times.

True, although I'd have thought it unlikely that the OP would know what their sync speed usually is, much less refer to it as the speed that they 'have' (i.e. have chosen, ordered and paid for).

Depends if they know how to look at their router stats or in the case of a usb modem the downstream sync speed is usally displayed by windows on establishing the PPPoA/PPPoE session.

no not unlimited speed but unlimited downloads and unless you delve very deeply you wont find the limit by throttling mentioned

as i have said before if they advertised thus

"5mb broadband with 4 half hour boosts to 20mb during peak hours with unlimited 20mb outside peek hours"

then they wouldn't have any of these moans

does it really matter bout the stm as you have to put up with it there is plenty hours of the day when you can use 20mb if you didnt like it you wouldnt use it or have it

not a matter of being happy its a matter of not getting what it seems you have been sold

not every one understands contention of service etc

if the advertised fairly they most likely would still get most of these people to buy their service with out the moans

If you believe that give trading standards a call.

I too am getting 2400kbps transfer speeds on my 20mb connection so im more than happy !

It seems the unlucky few who have ongoing issues.

My 20mb connection has been just as stable as my 10meg ever was !

I'd be happy if I could stay connected long enough to do such a speed test. My whole town is having problems and the ticket has been open since Saturday.

Anyway Agent 47. Your target is this man http://www.sevenstarsandstripes.com/content/airline/virginatlantic/VirginAtlantic-09.jpg

My client would like you to use the garrote :)

Didn't I say unlimited downloads in my first post? You seemed to disagree.
