Can you please help ID this tree.

We thought it was an American Sweet chestnut, but the leaves are different, if the attached pics aren't good enought I'll try and upload one from my camera

I can't really see the shape of the leaves from your pictures. Have a look at this site. (http://www-saps.plantsci.cam.ac.uk/trees/index.htm) I have found it quite helpful in the past.

If it's still not clear what tree you have try to photo a leaf and a fruit casing on their own so that I can see the shape better.

If you open up a fruit casing and take a picture of the type of fruit that would also be helpful. Have to say though it does look like some form of either a European chestnut or beech nut tree.

It looks like a Plane tree

- has it got bark that flakes off in patches?

I agree with homealone. The lobed leaves didn't show up too well on your original photos. Here's a good photographic illustration for you to compare with your tree.

With some more information here.

I like Plane trees..they are so part of the urban environment people don't really notice them.

Where I used to live there was a row of about 20 Plane trees. They stood in a single row at the end of a grassed area with no buildings near by to obscure them. They looked incredible and the sound of the wind going through the leaves was lovely.
