Hi all

I'm getting a lot of frustrating problems connecting to different sites, getting the message Description: Could not connect to the server "www.xxxxxx.co.uk".

Any ideas? The sties connect eventually, sometimes after a couple of retries but often after going to another site and trying later.

I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.5 on a Windows XP PC in Glasgow.

Thanks

Ken

Can you do a trace to one of these sites please ken.

Go to start menu -> Run -> type CMD (click ok) -> type tracert www.xxxxx.co.uk press enter.

To copy it right click and press "mark" and then press enter, you can then paste it into a message on this board.

Cheers.

Is the route identical each time you do the trace? Just wondering as I know that NTL dont use static route maps so could just be a specific route that is failing.

Yes, the route is identical....

Here's the second one

go to www.traceroute.org and choose UK and do some traces to your own IP address and see if you get any problems on them.

Hi guys,

I also am in the Glasgow area, and all last week, i noticed very regular drop outs during the day. At first i noticed it by MSN logging back in, then i kept getting the same reports as the kenseaton. When i was downloading from newsgroups, i could see graphically when the connection was made and when i twas broken, and it was happening every 5 or 10 mins or so, and would be offline for about a min or two at a time. The lights on the modem verified what i was seeing onscreen. ie no signal, then it would go through what looked like a reboot situation. Dunno if it is still the same today or not, as i am back at work.

Thanks for confirming a problem - just updated my version of Firefox but have had the connection problem since.

Now on the Vista-fuelled laptop and haven't seen any problems so far.

Given how random it is it sounds very similar to what is called a FEC problem. Doesnt always effect speeds but can affect the stability of a connection which you would notice in the form of random problems connecting or disconnects during online gaming. Call up and ask them to check for FEC errors on your UBR.

Ha ha, you're on commission aren't you...

Thanks, but I may send an email and see if it gets answered.
