Hi,

I just got Broadband Size M (2Mbps) installed today. I ran a speedtest on speedtest.bbmax.co.uk (which I've always found to be reliable). Downstream speeds are better than my old 2Mb ADSL connection, but upstream speeds are quite a bit worse:

Download Speed: 1960 kbps (245 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 168 kbps (21 KB/sec )

Shouldn't I be getting 30-32KB/sec upstream?

hello mike

I think the maximum upload speed from VM is 750/kbps at the moment, even if u having XL package..

hopefully will get better in near future

750kbps is for 20Mb.

You should be getting 256 kbits per sec, as far as I am aware...

2Mbps = 200Kbps upload (22KB/s ish)
4Mbps = 400Kbps upload (45KB/s ish)
10Mbps = 512Kbps upload (55KB/s ish)
20Mbps = 768Kbps upload (85KB/s ish)

You expect 30-32KB/s because ADSL often has 288Kbps upload instead of the lower 200Kbps.

Both Virgin (http://pressoffice.virginmedia.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=205406&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=934307&highlight=) and Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_Media#Virgin_Broadband) say I should be getting 256Kbps.

256 / 8 = 32KiB/sec - same as my old ADSL.

The speeds quoted by AbyssUnderground are correct.

what?
01-08-2007, 11:46
the upload on vm for 2meg is 256k

couldn't actually find this on the vm website but under the traffic management section it does let u no about the speeds that it will get set to if u go over the threshold, and on 2meg it drops to 128k. under stm all the speeds are halfed so it would suggest normal upload of 256k.

and i was pretty sure that what it was

256Kbps is for ADSL ONLY. Not for cable. Cable has an upstream of 200, 400, 512 or 768Kbps.

it's not

the 2meg upload IS 256
4meg IS 384
20meg IS 768

Thats maybe for the old BY setup. The old NTL setup was 200, 400, 512, and 768. How do I know this? Well for one I'm on 4Mbps with 400Kbps upload and was previously on 2Mbps with 200Kbps upload. And for another, I read this forum all the time. Its knowledge you pick up.

Oh and its been known for tech support to know bog all about the system they're supporting ;) This is proof. ;)

what?
01-08-2007, 14:53
well the current upload for by area customers is still the ones i quoted.

wouldn't be able to gaurentee on ntl areas but telewest def still using these

so, may depend on the area that mikes in

and there are some tech support agent who know nothing about the systems, some of us however do actually take an interest in it so we can help on calls.

vmtech

ohh right so because it say it on this forum thats make it true???
in the ntl area it is
2mb - 200kbps
4mb - 384kbps
10mb - 384kbps
20mb - 768kbps
so now who knows bog all???
oh and for proof this is the thing you need

I already knew that help was unknown to VM, posting a link wasn't necessary.

And I would like to make myself clear yet again.

ex BY:

2Mbps: 192Kbps
4Mbps: 384Kbps
10Mbps: 384Kbps
20Mbps 768Kbps

ex NTL:

2Mbps: 200Kbps
4Mbps: 400Kbps
10Mbps: 512Kbps
20Mbps 768Kbps

VM ADSL
256Kbps upload only as far as I am aware

It is quoted as the ex BY values on the VM website so those on the ex BY platform won't complain when they see that they should have more if they quoted the ex NTL speeds.

Now do you get it?

i'm on the 20Mbps package, but i only ever seem to see a maximum of around 58KB/s :(
my upload hasn't improved at all since the 10-20Mb upgrade

Have you checked your configuration in your modem to confirm you are on 20Mbps and not 10Mbps?

http://root:root@192.168.100.1

Your upstream should be 768Kbps not 512Kbps (or 384Kbps)

Pyr0

yup, i got the 20M upgrade a couple of weeks ago:
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 20480000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 768000

download speeds increased to around 1.8MB/sec, but uploads didn't improve one bit *shrug* :(

Check your signals as this could have an effect on speed.

I can guarantee that BY has never had an upstream of 192Kbits only on the STM 2Mbit

what?
03-08-2007, 11:03
is not stm on 4/10mbit which is at 384 originally?

2mbit def isnt as high as 384

its 256 tho that is being disagreed on as u may well have noticed

If people are not sure put 192.168.100.1 and post the upstream level and what you level of service you are on ie ex ntl
maximum Downstream Data Rate : 20480000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 768000

:)If they are different to what the site says then we will have a upto date info

Check your signals as this could have an effect on speed.

i have no idea what i'm looking for in there...

is this the relevant info?

Downstream Frequency : 586750000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM64
Downstream Interleave Depth : taps12increment17
Downstream Receive Power Level : -13.4 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 30.2 dB

Upstream Transmit Power Level : 53.50 dBmV
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream Frequency : 37500000 Hz

*shrug*

what?
03-08-2007, 17:33
r u former ntl or telewest?

Your downstream power is a little low. It should be nearer 0. Suggest you get an engineer out to take a look.
