not sure if this is the correct forum to post in so please dont flame me :D

Im a newsgroups newbie and ive just got newsleecher trial version, connection to newshosting.com as my server, and newzbin to search with

anyway ive set newsleecher up as nhxl.newshosting.com and only getting 450kb/s download, so put it as 4 bots in port 3128 and 3 on port 80 still only 450kb/s download

now i know this isnt maxing out my connection as i can download from microsoft.com at 1MB/sec still (20mb connection)

newsleecher also says speed ''limit: none''

anyone any ideas why newsleecher isnt using my full connection??

tried it on another laptop and it was the same, newsleecher taking 500 and microsoft still allowing 1.5MB downloads to be running at same time

thanks in advance :D

try chaning the default port from 119 to 7000, 8000 or 9000

hi, just emailing newshosting at the minute and they looked at my traceroute and said to use 8000 as it has the least amount of latency in it

tried that and still 500kb/s average, however i can still download a microsoft.com download at 500kb/s aswell so obviiously the newsgroup download isnt maxing out my connection?

ive seen numberous thread on here and other boards about people not able to max out newshosting, i would try a different provider just to see, giganews does a free trial, usenetserver does $3 for 3 days

Dear Guy,

That's probably just the little extra overhead from using the NNTP protocol.
It's pretty close to where you should be.

Thank you,

got an email off newshosting saying i should be on the european server and sent me a link, so ive used that

now at 5oclock, i was getting a sexual looking 2000kb/s, on either useserver or newshosting, left it on while i come to work and now an hour and half later and its now at 580.

im thinking the service has either gone back to being s**t
or ive hit the 3gb and theyve throttled me down to the 5mb
or i havent hit the 3gig but their f**ked up traffic management system has throttled me anyway

however once this interesting article downloads then the computer will be switched off, and then i'll be at home at 6 to test it. by then the throttling will have stopped AND there wont be many people on virgin anyway...

have to see what tomorrow brings, if its giving me 500 again at 11am.. virgin will be getting a friendly phone call again

if you are downloading at abotu 2MB/s then you wil lhit it in less than 30 minutes

yeah realised that after i posted it.. lol

traffic shaping will have started at approx 5.45pm,

computer was switched off at 8.45pm.
shaping should finish 4 hours after 5.45pm so 9.45pm ? damn shoulda left it on and tried it now..

so by the time i get home from work at 6am i should definately have full 2MB/s download speeds back.. even if the traffic management is screwed up and the 4hrs counts from the 8.45pm when the computer was switched off or the midnight end of peak period ..

all I can say is that I get full speed, well 480KB/s, anyway, using GigaNews on my 4Mb/s connection. DN35, btw.

- so far shaping has 'worked', in that I get speed reduced to around 235KB/s after approximately 750MB has been downloaded, between 1600 & midnight :)

homealone, im at dn40, will see what tomorrow brings, see if they have finally sorted my crap download speeds! (virgin that is)

can someone do a test for me? when youve got your newsgroup maxed out, is your internet still quick? and can you still download from microsoft.com at an ok transfer rate?

just an update:

6.30am
download from newserver at 2.05MB/s through wireless router, equating to 16.4mbit?
Linksys wrt54g firmware v4.21.1

7.10am
cable direct to modem, no router involved, 2.36mb/s

7.14am, wireless via router - 2.10mb/s

7.15am
cable to router, to modem - 2.36mb/s

drops to 1.9mb/s if router firewall is enabled.
