Basically, newsgroups are repositories of files that people upload. You can find anything there. Full length DVDs, TV episodes, badger porn, you name it. Advantages of using newsgroups for your illegal downloads are: Speed (they are usually faster than p2p), and relative anonimity/legal issues (you don't have to upload or share). You need a special program (a 'newsreader') to download files from them. Most ISPs offer newsgroup access, but generally ISPs offerings are poor, as the files don't stay on the server very long (poor retention), and the files (which are broken up into several smaller ones) are often incomplete. People who are serious about downloading from newsgroups often subscribe to commercial services like giganews or easynews.

news groups - straight 'text' groups are easily accessible via standard clients like Outlook Express, there is a Virgin Media discussion group, afaik??

The text format can be also used in clever ways to encode 'binary' information.

This can include, for example, video files, if you have the means to decode the information.....
