Hi guys, Over the last week or so I have noticed that the 20mb service from Virgin is becoming a bit more stable

see

Tue, 17 Jul 2007 06:20:24 UTC

1st 512K took 328 ms = 1561 KB/sec, approx 12863 Kbps, 12.56 Mbps
2nd 512K took 250 ms = 2048 KB/sec, approx 16876 Kbps, 16.48 Mbps
3rd 512K took 235 ms = 2178.7 KB/sec, approx 17952 Kbps, 17.53 Mbps
4th 512K took 265 ms = 1932.1 KB/sec, approx 15921 Kbps, 15.55 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 15903 Kbps, 15.53 Mbps

Obviously this is an earlier morning snapshot, here is one at 7.30pm.

1st 512K took 297 ms = 1723.9 KB/sec, approx 14205 Kbps, 13.87 Mbps
2nd 512K took 219 ms = 2337.9 KB/sec, approx 19264 Kbps, 18.81 Mbps
3rd 512K took 203 ms = 2522.2 KB/sec, approx 20783 Kbps, 20.3 Mbps
4th 512K took 250 ms = 2048 KB/sec, approx 16876 Kbps, 16.48 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 17782 Kbps, 17.37 Mbps

Keep up the good work VM

well there is always teething problems and I think stm will stablise the network until they do major upgrades on ubr's and the backbone

IMO that test is far too small and gives very inflated results. A more realistic test is the one on ADSLguide and although I used to see 18\19 megs on that, I now see 2\3 megs.

I have had the supposedly 20 meg from release and although the initial start was shaky there is no doubt that for a short time it delivered as promised. For several weeks now there has been a steady decline and it is approaching dire levels when less than 1 Meg is all that can be reached.

I was on 10 megs from it's upgrade release and without doubt the service was excellent. Since the upgrade to 20 Megs the service has reverted to the bad old days of rubbish. I ask myself why I am paying for 20 when I get 4 and am toying with the choice of downgrading or just telling them to rip out all services.

From this sites test..

1st 512K took 203 ms = 2522.2 KB/sec, approx 20783 Kbps, 20.3 Mbps
2nd 512K took 219 ms = 2337.9 KB/sec, approx 19264 Kbps, 18.81 Mbps
3rd 512K took 219 ms = 2337.9 KB/sec, approx 19264 Kbps, 18.81 Mbps
4th 512K took 203 ms = 2522.2 KB/sec, approx 20783 Kbps, 20.3 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 20024 Kbps, 19.56 Mbps

From Adsl guide.....

Date 17/07/07 12:46:59 Speed Down 2164.62 Kbps ( 2.1 Mbps ) Speed Up 718.31 Kbps ( 0.7 Mbps ) Port 8095 Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk

The ADSLguide is a truer reflection of the service.

I generally do not trust any of the speed tests, but for the last few days I have been getting between 17-19 meg when d/l from giganews. The only time it has dropped is when the shaping kicks in. When I was first upgraded the speeds were dire....

yes, to the adslguide speed test ONLY, if you're seeing 20mb to *a* speed test or elsewhere, your equipment is working fine. this would suggest the bottleneck being elsewhere other than your ubr etc, be it on the vm network or not.

Dev.

I have seen\been involved in the network problem discussions going way back to before broadband even existed in this country and invariably poor service tends, if persistent to be the fault of the ISP which in my case runs back though VM, NTL and back to CableTel (years on dial up).

Currently slow response is at virtually all network points and bottlenecks into massive problems at virtually any and every hop onto the major back bones. Even the DNS servers creak at times which would be a sure sign of congestion but as I have seen problems at 02.00 I suspect the system is falling apart yet again.

I have run a multitude of pingplotter recording traces to various destinations and almost without fail it displays packet losses generated intermittently from within VM's network and almost always from beyond the backbone entry\exit point. Concurrent tests on my Zen ADSL show how a network should work and how NTL's did before Virgin bought in.

Averaging 1.9 MB/s on downloads later this afternoon which is faster than usual for this time of day and it's definitely better than this morning when it was downloading at 0.1 MB/s which is unusual for this area.
Hopefully someone has been twiddling some knobs at the VM end. :dozey:

Oh, and the VM file server is now working a lot better.
