Hi all,

I'm a XL Virgin media broadband user in Bristol (no 20mb yet).
I use a 3ghz P4, with 1.5gb RAM and Vista Ultimate.
I have a Scientific Atlanta DPX-100 cable modem
I have a Netgear RP614v1 router
I use Grabit
Newshosting is my usenet provider (8 concurrent, unlimited).

My issue is speed. Grabit max's out at 518kb/s, however following a reboot downloads initially stat much quicker and then seem to be throttled back.

What I'd like is best guesses as to why this happens? And suggestions as to what I can do to try and improve the download speed?

Sounds like your router is having issues when it gets too many connections

I dont know the set up with that router but i suggest you take a look at the following

Enter the following values at 'IP Filter Settings'
Maximum Ports: 4096
TCP Timeout (s): 3600 to 90 (decrease if you have many TCP connections)
UDP Timeout (s): 3600 to 90 (decrease if you have many UDP connections)

Thanks. Sadly those settings are not configurable.

number of connections & timeouts at a router are often an issue with P2P but not with usenet/NNTP. OP has a fixed number of connections, and presumably traffic flowing constantly on each.

DL Speed was the same on XP SP2 prior to my vista build.

In fact, it hasn't changed despite 2 speed upgrades from BY/Virgin. Getting same now as I did on a 4Mb connection.

It's the visible "throttling back" that I'm puzzled about.
