View Full Version : Why are my speeds so slow in the evening?

I have noticed since I was installed on the 27th June to date that my broadband speeds drop to around:

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2007/07/70.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

It was the same when I was on the 2MB package, I would only ever get upto 1MB in the evenings??

Im now getting the same with their 4MB package, I know they have traffic shaping but I thought you had to go over a limit before it kicks in?

All I have done is spend 10 mins viewing cable forum, have not downloaded anything so why is my download speed so low in the evenings?

OMG, they are destroying cable BB!

I thought cable BB was supposed to be better than ADSL?

Granted if you abuse it then you deserve it, but I only browse! I want 4MB because I use voip and like to play warrock every now and again!

What's going on?

If that happens to me then the BB will be unfit for use and I will cancel and fight it via the courts if need be!

That would be a real shame, some people just ruin it for everyone!

what is going on is that the speedtest.net 'test' is not reliable as a true measure of 'real' connection speed.

A good result with speedtest.net, afaik can be believed, however, if you get a bad result it may not be your connection, but their server, suffering the overload .....

But I have tested my speeds with four different speed testers and all report the same result however when i speed test via cable forum which is internal i get 3.5ish MB so what is going on?

well, unless totally off the radar, a test which gives you close to your nominal speed 'usually' can be believed.

- i.e. if you are absolutely sure the CF test wasn't cached, it shows your end of connection is not at fault.

However poor performance on external, routed links, can be a problem, in some areas, but that will need more genned up people than I to explain :dozey: , & why, apparently, NNTP seems to work fine for some people, while HTTP can be pants.

As a complete guess, I think it is to do with switching off the proxy servers, some areas are not yet 'up to speed' with that & the upgrades required for VOD & 20Mb ?????

I am not going to pretend I know whats going on because I don't!

All I know is every evening my broadband drops to speeds of around 1MB or less and I hardly use my BB conection other than to browse a few forums, check emails and make some voip calls!

Now if the average person works mon - fri but most work mon - sat then that only leaves a sunday at the recommended speed!

So I am paying for a 4MB service that I only get on a sunday, ADSL starts to looker better and I have poor speeds on that!

I hope things improve!

(sorry if post does not make sense but I have had a few beers!) LOL

Suure. And the fact it's consistant across speedtest.net servers, other speedtests time out, game pings are 2000+ with 45% dropped packets...

That may be so, but as I said above I have tested several speed testers and all say the same thing!

I have also tried downloading from Microsofts website, same thing! Downloads at 1MB???

Everyday but only in the evenings!

Not bad for a 4mb connection!
Was on the phone for half hour last night, couldn't get anything resolved.
I was promised a call back, but nothing materialised.
Got home from work, and discovered that my modem has been reset to a 20mb connection. Nice for the price of 4mb

Dismal here today, dial-up speed all morning and not much better in the afternoon.
Certainly not due to congestion, people round here are selling their furniture to make ends meet, cable went out the door ages ago.

Virgin speed are so slow because they do not have the Server Capacity-how about 0.01 of a MB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-ie 20kb /sec-thats as bad as mine gets until the server disconnects me internally forcing me to have to reboot!-and my line is quite capable of over 1mb!

Wasn't bragging, just confused - as most Virgin customers are these days:shocked::shocked:

Bill lands, Bill is wrong, Virgin sails off into the sunset!!!

PS speeds have slowed down even further over last 2 wks because Scottish Schools finished for Holidays!!!!!!!!!!!-generally fall after 3-30 ish when kids get home and go on line!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

---------- Post added at 18:04 ---------- Previous post was at 17:59 ----------

You can tell Im angry-when I first took on Virgin Broadband two years ago here in Highlands when we were finally linked in as I recall system operated at about 800kb-as soon as they increased to offer me a humble 1.1mb and then offered unlimited downloads things began to go downhill-yes as bad as 20kb/sec.and always evenings and weekends with variations depending whether soaps/Big Brother etc were on TV-Im now trying to escape but of course get no reply from Customer Service numbers!

I am on 4mb, hardly download and am getting this for £25 per month

Who are they kidding?
Telephone call to retentions tomorrow, that speed does not warrant £10 per month.
