Is it just me or is everyone getting this really slow connection in this area?

I'm a big online gamer and I have noticed my ping has rose to around 80-100 ms from around 20-40 which doesn't sound alot and I know players who play with that all the time, but when mine hits the 80-100 ms mark it's unplayable and I tried everything with the settings firewalls etc.

So in the end i'm pointing the finger at branson but need others opinion?

I never had these problems with ntl only since i have got the move to virgin media with there "super duper fast broadband" ....

Btw nice to meet you all I have been a reader for around a year but now thanks to the super virgin company i'm a resident whiner too ;)

Thanks,

Matt.

Welcome to the forum :tu:

Following April's issues in Stoke area, things had not been too bad up until the end of last week. Then since 20Mb upgrade yesterday it's got even worse

That said I saw water gushing out of those little black Nynex traingles outside houses in my road yesterday. Next time a VM engineer comes to pull a cable I hope he's a trained scuba-diver as there's much water under he pavement :Yikes:

4th 512K took 4757 ms = 107.6 KB/sec, approx 887 Kbps, 0.87 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 786 Kbps, 0.77 Mbps

It went about 40mins ~ 1h ago.

Comes back towards midnight. There have been faults reported in surrounding areas the last few evenings but why this keeps happening who knows.

Just hope some VM guys on here can help sort the issues.

Welcome to the forum i doubt anyone can help you tbh theres a hell of a lot of people in the same boat and all our cries are just hitting deaf ears.

Worst of them is vm technical support 1st line and there scripts 2nd line is a bit better and even the guys there told me to switch provider i have totally gave up after having these problems since the virgin media rebrand they done something which totally screwed the works up for me to much of a coincidence for my liking and now with all these charges being brought in im off.
i phoned them up today to see where the free months i got told to apply for from the engineer had went and they said they couldnt credit me any as my issues hadnt been resolved (big lol), so i asked for disconnections please and ok putting you through after waiting like a fool for 20 mins my mobile credit ran out (bye to my phones last 9 quid).

So i emailed them to complain and asked to be disconnected im not putting up with it anymore i waited for the upgrade went fine 2 days then bam back to where i was slow downloads random disconnect due to the massive amount of packet loss (like packets where net was not even responding for 2 mins apart).

So now for me its just a waiting game as when they can be bothered to get in touch if i dont hear anything by friday ill be back on the phone and screaming on again nothing is getting solved in a hurry and just looks like getting worse, i was out of contract 4 year ago and they just treat me like a fool so time to shop about or i could just cancel and restart and get my net for nearly a tenner cheaper for a year but no i dont think ill go that route for some reson :S.

You can get a bt line which is like 10-12 quid a month rental and sky package with sky sports and upto 16mb (but i only want about 5-10 and stable) broadband and it works out about £53 only a tenner dearer than im paying for net only atm £37 + the £5 lolable handling charge.
So ill still troll the posts on here and hopefully ill get a reply before i vent my spleen on friday and if i dont one of the workers on here can try and get me disconnected i hope :).
So farewell fellow winers good luck with your deaf cries

p.s. before i leave ill complain like the rest to ofcom and even bbc watchdog tonight in the hope that it will somehow help you guys left on the good ship lollypop :).

Well ok here's me reporting in,

My brother plays a online game called guild wars, its ping is normally around 150ms to 200ms which for a game like that is perfect, now then right now he has a average ping of 1000ms to 6000ms! I cant understand what the big problem is what was the major difference from NTL to Virgin no cabling was changed (was it?!) are they just giving us slow speeds?

I play CSS for money and I have no intention of playing that game tonight or for the past 3 nights with my net playing up as it is, it's a absolute shambles and I am so raged at their "broadband support" call charges.

I'm thinking two words in my head when I think about paying 25p a minute to listen to someone tell me to hold, hold, hold and then find out there's nothing that can be done or that they can be arsed to do, guess what they are.

Well there's my little whine.

Matt.

Ok, do they even know there is a problem ?

I mean they CANNOT expect us to put up with this, if i went to a computer shop and brought a graphics card that only worked to its full potential 5-10% of the time, I would have a full refund and have it replaced.

Why is it/should it be different for broadband ?

Matt.

I'm in the ST6 area of Stoke and am allegedly on the 20Mbps service

I've been getting speeds around 300kbps to 1Mbps now for about 2 months. I've had an engineer visit who replaced the modem and insisted that everything at my end is now working fully.

They are getting another phone call shortly, this is ridiculous now, especially as the price increase has gone through.

ST5 Area of Newcastle. 2Mb connection.

Which speedtest is the one to use? It's the inconsistancy that annoys me and the traffic shaping 'rules'. General web browsing is sluggish and unresponsive. Downloads are eratic. I downloaded/uploaded 1.3GB today during off peak hours, nothing after 4PM. But I'm traffic shaped and it affects everything not a smooth 1Mb limit.
