Need some advice trying to send signal upstairs but the dongles not gettin much of a signal would i be better with a pci card? I think the lack of an aerial may be causing the problem.

You might be, possibly one which allows you to connect an external antenna.

I would spend some time eliminating potential sources of interference first though, and try a different channel on the router - you might just find that helps.....maybe.....

I've never had a USB wireless dongle myself, but have family that use them and they seem to get fairly good ranges.

Start from the start and tell us what equipment you are using, what pc's ect you have running so we can offer more on what could be wrong with you setup.

Wireless USB dongles can work fine ... I've used a few. Some are better than others. They work better when you use a USB cable and move them away from the back of the PC. Scan do a great one with an external twig. (old CB talk for Antenna :-))

A good point from you there planbee leaving the dongle next to the pc and monitor does cause crosstalk.

Remember using an extension can also slow it down too.

Thanks for the comment. Years as a failed Radio Ham....:-) Crosstalk in my experiance is a smaller problem than the thing radiating into the steel chassis. By moving the device you allow the dongle free range. Although they do transmit in all directions... maybe a craft knife, coke can and piece of tin foil are in order.... here's one I prepared earlier :-)

Edit: Actually the signal to the dongle is digital so as long as the cable isn't poor quality or the length of the M6... you will suffer no loss of performance... But you will never beat cable... I've gone from co-ax to UTP to wireless and now back to UTP (albeit at giga speeds)

Rotten news re Vista Ultimate :-(

So true. On my main badboy am hard wired. Canny beat it. lol. lol..
Had to cause i couldn't get any faster that 9-10MB when wireless.
Now am packin 18 or so with the VM 20MB. Sometimes a touch lower.

Crosstalk to me is interference and leaving the dongle next to the pc and monitor will interrupt the signal.

Shall we agree then that... putting the dongle away from the PC is a good plan then :-)
