Just called the Broadband status line - 0800 561 0061.

Recorded message says....

Customers on the XL 20MB/s service may be experiencing slow downloads. This does NOT affect scientific atlanta and motorola modems. Engineers are aware of the problems and are working on it !

The modems unaffected are ex-Telewest, running across the ex-Telewest network.

The Modems affected are all the others... running across the ex-NTL network.

Is it the modem or is it the network... I wonder...

Not So! I am ex-Telebest and I have a Motorola SB 5100E and yup the speeds are appalling at present. Still, I remember something similar when they did the 10Mb upgrade so I'm not toooo fussed. Besides I do most of my stuff after midnight anyway and its a lot better then, though not perfect.

Would this account for me constantly getting 12 or 13MB since the supposed upgrade to 20MB was completed? I'm on ex-NTL.

Lucky you, I've not been able to get anything approaching double figures for weeks.

Whats the betting that message stays on there for months to come and nothing gets done about it?

Merlin99uk added one, which I missed, and it is vital!

Downloading anything of any size from the States has been rubbish for me for ages, thought I would give it another try after the 20 Meg upgrade to see if anything has changed.
I downloaded DVD's from 5 public servers chosen at random, 4 gave 2.33 MB/s fifth one was really slow.
Admittedly this was at 2 am, but I tend to download in the early hours anyway.

Definitely keeping my ntl:200 :tu:

I'm on a ex- Telewest network with a motorola sb4200 modem & although I am getting 10 -14mb at the WE it's not got close to the claimed 20Mb, again drops off to 5-7Mb when I use it most 7.00pm onwards when I get in from work.

Too little too late for me. Been on the fastest cable & wireless/Ntl/Virgin provided for years, today had enough and dropped to 2mb from the '20mb' (my ****) package.

What's the point of having 20mb if a) they can't provide it and b) my service is so unreliable it drops at least 2 days a week. Got tech services coming round on Friday supposedly. Last time they didn't show, so I told 'John' in Deli (or whomever) that if they didn't show I'd be ringing at 16:01 to cancel what's left of my virgin media 'service'.

Just got back online now after being off all day. So cheesed off with this crap, and all along, I gritted my teeth saying 'They'll sort it, just be patient'. £37 a month for rubbish service is unacceptable. At least the customer service robot said he'd refund my 25p/min call cost.

No wonder Branson and co. want to get shut of what was NTL - it's worse than it's ever been, and I been with 'em through thick and thin.

I've seen a lot of people from numerous areas complaining about very slow speeds.

I've noticed this http://status-cable.virginmedia.com/vmstatus/serviceissue.do;jsessionid=2EDD4470F660503DBC83B8C 9797B108E.jsps304p:28009?ticket=481907 on the support page which seems to indicate our issue could be a national issue and not regional

However, if they've had problems since mid June then why the hell continue upgrading and giving even more people the same problem

I've certainly only been affected since being upgraded 4 days ago which seems to tie in with this issue. My speed drops to around 1/2 a meg from 3 onwards and goes back to normal around 2 am. Has done again today and I haven't downloaded a thing yet

Also note it's a P1 priority yet it's still ongoing for 2 weeks and counting !!!

I've today gone down from 20mb. Hopefully I can find a reasonably reliable isp and ditch VM altogether, as their 2mb turns out to be - at most - 600kb.

Hear hear!

It's sad when your upload speed isn't far off double your download speed.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2007/07/114.png

The test before that wasn't even getting into triple figures but I didn't even let it complete!

My temporary solution is using swan-cache-5.server.ntli.net (one of the few remaining it seems), but even that is half of 20mbit at best.

What brand is my 250 modem? I always get the full 20Mbit.

Our modem says "ntl:home 120" on the back, does that mean anything significant?

20Mb thread merged with an existing 20Mb thread - there is no need for several 20Mb threads all over the place, can we keep to one please, Thanks.

Merged with the earlier thread regarding download speed problems on the 20Mbps service.

the one I started was VERY SPECIFICALLY about the apparant national issue regards speed for anyone with the XL package and linking to the ticket detailing the issue

If you bother to look there are plenty of threads on this very issue, we don't need anymore 20Mb threads, we have enough.

I witnessed just over 2000Kb/s earlier today with our 120 but the most i`ve usually seen since the upgrade has been around the 16Mb mark.Even thats been the exception to the rule though and it`s normally a lot less just now.
