thought that my browsing has slowed down today, so tried downloading a file on giganews but was lucky to hit 2.5mb(on 10meg sat at 8min all day long), whats going on? never had this problem when the the connection was 10meg.

anyone else having probs? speedtest(not the .net version) and it's up and down like the proverbial working girls draws, ranging from 2 - 14meg but everything is just so painfully slow ever since 20meg came on friday (the most giganews have given me is 12meg)

Hi m8, I am in Runcorn and have just tried d/l from usenet and one of the torrent sites and both their speeds are woeful. I am off the Baguley connection and as far as I know I am still on 10 meg...

yours not and running yet then bill? pray it doesn't because at the moment it more hassle than it's ever worth. and what do they say about things getting worse before they get better? can it???

i mean for the last year that i've had 10meg it was sweet as a nut, very little if any slowdown. the month leading up to the 20 rollout i started to have probs as i've told you bill, and now my part server is running 20meg it's having issues from the start and after 2 days there worse.

i haven't even attempted to play bf2142 online today with these speeds because i'm competitive and just getting fragged all day would see me lose my temper and i wouldn't want to put my keyboard through the bedroom window, that said since friday my pings to my clan server have near doubled and to be honest its ****in me off (weather it's vm's fault or not).

Would just like to point out that both Giganews servers, UK and USA are providing full speed here, 2.34MB/s.

So theres no problem at their end.

I'm downloading from Giganews right now and whilst it reached a peak of 2.2-2.3MB/s an hour ago, it's back on what it has been most of the evening at 0.5MB/s. I'm in West Essex.

Still 2.34MB/s here, gotta be local network issues for some, ie everyone is downloading their pr0n at the same time :D

at this rate a very crappy network if they don't pull the proverbial finger out of ar$e it's gonna get worse, just tried another file and a pathetic 228kb/s, come off it vm you had a fairly stable network (i know it wasn't/isn't perfect for everyone) and now it's getting screwed in an attempt to provide the fastest speeds and is becoming a bit of a joke. and i flatly refuse to pay for support for a service that i'm paying top buck for.

You are not missing much mate, the speeds are crap, d/l of newsgroups and only getting 2 meg max. By the way it took a couple of reboots before it went on to 20 meg....

Down the pub, totally agree with you m8, had a great 10 meg connection and now it is **** poor.....

Is it my imagination or has the connections limit on news.ntlworld.com been lifted, im sure it used to be a max of 10, i thought i would just test, as people have complained about the VM servers being slow and needed to use 40 Connections LOL to get near full speed on the server,

well got an engineer coming saturday morning to have a look, hopefully he'll understand the network issues and maybe get something done about it (that last visit i had about a month ago about the power levels, all he did was look at the config page and the street cab and said that the modem was fine and signal from cab to modem was ok, he left saying it was a network issue and nothing he could do and to ring it in - another wasted days holiday).

this is really getting to me now, tonight i've had persistent connection drops (talkin to billy nomates in teamspeak), cr8p d/l speads, and pings that wouldn't look out of place on US servers (people abroad were getting lower pings than me - on the bloody uk servers).

im not sure how long they have but last year i connected with 99 conenctions to it, never use the server tho as i dont see the point when i havea giganews account

Tried upping my server connections, and also connecting early this morning - still only maxing out at 800k on news servers. Definitely Virgin slowing things down - but for god knows what reason?

Really annoyed. I was faster on 10meg by quite some margin.

On cpc2-with4-0-0-custxxx.bagu.cable.ntl.com and speed tests still showing max of 8meg connection.

One angry customer here.

giganews was going at about 14meg for me yesterday (damn wireless)

i have found that SSL enabled on the connections slows things down marginally

My speeds were a hell of a lot better this morning, I was getting a constant 16 meg d/l from Usenetserver..

I too noticed a huge drop-off in speed from GigaNews around about 30 June. I'm still on 10 MB.

I'm in the Birmingham area.

Between this and torrent traffic shaping, what am I paying 37 quid for?

I've only just moved to this country (from Canada), what better alternatives are there?

Richy99

they dont shape torrents, they shape all traffic between 4pm and midnight once you go over 3Gb downloaded

alternatives are adsl providers

I take it this is due to decryption/encryption process.

Ive been on the 20MB service for a while now (since it came out) and live in the Watford area. I do most of my downloading via Giganews, and have noticed that the speed has dropped notably since I used to be on 10MB. Now, across 10 connections, I get a overall speed of 550-600KBs which is a quarter of what I was expecting.

This morning (Sunday) I tested the new modem I was sent, and got over 2MBs via one of these links - http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/ - yet the speeds on Giganews were still the same.

Ive upped the MTU to 1500, whilst the diagnostic page (192.168.100.1) for my modem shows I am on the 20MB service.

Its a little frustrating, considering how much it costs, although I do tend to do my big downloads overnight and during the day so the most important thing for me right now is that the service is unlimited in terms of bandwidth usage.

Usenetserver, 20 meg line, 10 connections and i'm getting 330/KB/s max right now at this moment, shocking, been like this since upgrade to 20meg, i think i've only hit full 20meg twice in all the time i have had 20meg (just over a week) in the early morning.

This morning - downloading from Giganews across 9 connections gets me between 7-900KB/s.

Using a download from http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/ as a test however, I get a blistering 2.2MB/s.

Edit Update - I changed to Newsleecher V3 beta 5 and now my speeds have gone up to 2MB/s upwards which is what I would expect. 8GB download in approx 1 hour.

Im pretty convinced the replacement modem helped, however its worth trying a new(er) newsclient if my experience is anything to go by, or at the least, reinstalling the existing one which will clean-up temp folders etc.

quite probably, i using wireless but have seen SSL go to a max of about 13meg and without i have seen it go close to 15meg
