I've just been upgraded to 20meg (Harlow) and since then, I've had problems downloading off of newsgroups. I'm using Grabit and Giganews.

After downloading around 200-300Mb of data - at around 1.6-2.0Mb a second - the modem completely drops out. Even pulling the plug out and putting it back in a while later doesn't fix it. The computer needs a complete reboot for the connection to start working again.

I've got an NTL:Home 100 (is this the same as an Ambit 100?) modem. Is this just teething troubles, are Virgin Media capping newsgroup usage or more likely, do I need to call and request a new modem?

From reports posted here it seems the ambit 100 has a long history of connection dropping starting from when 10mbps was introduced. I think you should try to get it changed.

Funnily enough, I never had a problem with 10mbps. It's only since being upgraded and only ever when fully opening the connection (ie. using newsgroups) that it dies on me.

Thanks for confirming for me that the NTL:Home 100 is the same as the Ambit.

The modem upgrade advisor page on the VM site says the Ambit 100 is perfectly fine to run 20mbps.

Is this bull then?

Its bull... in practice, the Ambit 100 can not do 20meg

Time for a nice new 255 model.

Well, I fixed the problem.

I have two ethernet network adapters on my motherboard. The cable was plugged in to the Marvell Yukon one. All I did was remove it from there and plug it into the Intel PRO/1000 PL one and the connections been fine for hours. :)

I've updated the drivers for the Yukon. Maybe that'll improve things. Though, seeing as the Intel one works just fine, it's not a major issue.
