OK, Virgin gave me 4mb for £18 p/m as a retentions deal. Huzzah. The modem now says I am on 4mb after threatening them with trading stadards. Huzzah.
Speed test says this:

Now wth. Speedtest.bbmax.co.uk is no better.

I am seriously considering leaving now.
Any help on why this is happening. I have downloaded nothing, so why(if i am) being traffic shaped?

I am on 10mb but only get 600kbs. Try the speed test on this site.

Speed tests are notoriously unreliable & are subject to the servers running them being overloaded by the amount of traffic - a better test is to download a large file from a site like Microsoft, or better yet, from a commercial newsgroup server enabled for multiple threading.

Or if you must use a speed tester try Dan Elwells

http://www.broadbandspeedtest.net/

as it, at least, tests several servers in different locations.

Ha! Luxurious!

Try getting less than 2mb when you're supposed to be on TWENTY.

Arnt you the lucky one getting 4mb for £18.
I pay £25 for mine, and guess what I get what I pay for :p:
It just goes to show that you get what you pay for, or less as the case may be.

Thing is Rains people will continually swear by them until, A, They start to use newsgroups and DL from them or B, there is a more stable correct way of testing net speed for those that have little to do than to trawl through the 100's of speed test sites without really understanding that your ONLY AS FAST AS THE SLOWEST PART and then going to forums, venting their spleens at VM for providing slow connections\speeds when it is more than likely something outside of the VM network. That and the complaints about STM

If you have a 1 to 1 connection you will get the full alloted bandwidth from the loction/server you are down loading from, if you have say 100 users you will have to share that bandwidth, you will only get a decent speed if you download the file from various locations at the same time, i.e from multiply servers. As for speed tests on your connection never use just 1 site or location, London might give me 500k yet Lisbon might give me 8mb etc

Well Virgin have let me down again and yes I'll try Trading Standards. I get about 1 Mb on my 10Mb connection here in West Walthamstow in the eves, 10 in the morning. For a month or so I got 10Mb the majority of the time otherwise a rip off. Incidentally I tried BeThere and could only get 5 Mb because of distance from our BT exchange -- used by Virgin as a marketing point against ADSL!

Just a follow - up, seems to me that I should hang onto my BeThere service --- always 5Mb because it is reliable and I do not get the <1Mb in the eves as offered by Virgin - should be 10 and it is cheaper and has free helpline -- so I think that I will rescind my notice to BeThere and ask Virgin to remove their equipment.

I smile to myself reading theses posts. I should be on 2meg, I am retired and cannot afford 10meg, unless someone feels sorry for me and subs me ;o)
My current speed is as below. All was fine for months, as I download very little, and seemed unnafected by the dreaded throttling, but then I must have transgressed three or four days ago when I downloaded a large file, and downloaded more than my share, and now I have been punished for my sin. Can anyone tell me how long I will be in the sin bin, or is it arbitary?
(I have rebooted the box, and tried giving it the boot)

1st 512K took 7844 ms = 65.3 KB/sec, approx 538 Kbps, 0.53 Mbps
2nd 512K took 6469 ms = 79.1 KB/sec, approx 652 Kbps, 0.64 Mbps
3rd 512K took 6953 ms = 73.6 KB/sec, approx 606 Kbps, 0.59 Mbps
4th 512K took 7438 ms = 68.8 KB/sec, approx 567 Kbps, 0.55 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 591 Kbps, 0.58 Mbps

STM penalty is for 4 hours at a time. The following site has what I think is the clearest explanation:
http://abcde.co.uk/virginmedia/stm.html

Probably your area is suffering from over subscription (VM has signed up to many customers in your area), maybe your area has recently been upgraded to 20Mb, or perhaps there is local fault causing congestion?

not even 2mb never mine 4.

I notice the time of your post 18:12 are you sure you have not exceeded your quota of 750mb since 16:00 ?

That figure of 1.73 is almost exactly what I get from my 4Mb line, if for any reason I exceed the quota.

Just a thought......
