View Full Version : Blackburn Just Went Down

I was chatting with me mum on MSN, and she phoned me saying her connection had gone... the same had just happened to me.

A 20 Minute phone call to repairs said there was no Regional Fault, yet the thing still isnt fully working, and is painfully slow.

If Dean is here, could you let us know if it happened to you too?

Seems I cant access eBay, MSN or Hotmail anymore...

im in wigan and having a similar problem

similar in belfast, 90% of websites time out, outlook express and msn both refuse to connect, did a speed test and im getting 457kb/s down an 145kb/s up, supposed to be 10mb. Contacted my dad who also lives in belfast an hes got the same problems. Contacted another friend who lives in londonderry which is about 100miles away an hes exactly the same.
Dont know what the problem is but i am gettin mighty anoyed at the service, £37 per month for this.:mad:

We're having similar probs in Manchester/Stockport.. can't access msn, can't get to the bbc news site... not checked around that much, but... yeah.. there's something going on for sure...

Ive just done the reboots and stuff about 10 times, then as I talked to a tech, it suddenly starts to work.

He said "it shouldnt be long before full service is resumed."

Could it have been a Nationwide fault? It took 10 Mins for them to answer the phone due to "high call volumes".

Similar here in Wirral. I can't get access to email. Virgin Media web pages take forever to load - when they load at all.

Maybe we shaould all phone up as its still a freephone number for now...

http://status-cable.virginmedia.com/vmstatus/summary.do

No update...

Then again, it needs to affect 259 people before it is considered a "fault".

Dont know anything about Traceroutes, and I think CF is accessable because it is small.

Hotmail, MSN, eBay all big sites. Youtube is fine, even though thats been said to be a DNS' worst nightmare.

MySpace, the other DNS headache isnt working too...

same here in bolton,we were playing on xbox live, suddenly disconnected and web sites like this are taking ages + ages to load,i did a networktest with xbox live and it now says failed on the mtu test, tried rebooting modem but its not making any difference.Did a speedtest on the pc + im now getting 400k (im on 10 meg) but the upload has been increased to 600-700k(this must be the dreaded 20 meg upgrade curse)

Not sure I follow the logic there, slashdot.org is still available, and it gets enough hits to take down other peoples websites when they are linked from their, also the Synaptic package manager in Ubuntu is working fine, can pull down some fairly large packages at around 10mb just now

Most likely some weird routing/DNS issue, ran a couple of tests from here, seems to be routing that's the issue. david@david-laptop:~$ tracepath www.bbc.co.uk (http://www.bbc.co.uk)

Bizarre - everything is OK here.

Not sure whether this has something to do with it but a couple of major fibre cables were 'lost' today late afternoon. One due to the water / rain in Sheffield and one in Leeds due to a JCB 'accident'.

The fibre channels apparently went from Glasgow to London.

Just a thought.

Well I've had trouble too, Manchester, but I've noticed in the last hour that this has happened:

1st 512K took 266 ms = 1924.8 KB/sec, approx 15860 Kbps, 15.49 Mbps
2nd 512K took 281 ms = 1822.1 KB/sec, approx 15014 Kbps, 14.66 Mbps
3rd 512K took 234 ms = 2188 KB/sec, approx 18029 Kbps, 17.61 Mbps
4th 512K took 219 ms = 2337.9 KB/sec, approx 19264 Kbps, 18.81 Mbps

So my problems may have been caused by the 20mb upgrade (that I didn't want) to my 10mb service (that I didn't want either).

---------- Post added at 00:13 ---------- Previous post was at 00:03 ----------

I spoke way too soon there...I've now lost all access to absolutely everything!

Despite paying Virgin £90 a month for these services I once again find myself connecting via an expensive PAYG dialup.

Why can't they stop pushing the speed faster and faster, it is obvious the network cannot take it.

Peil
28-06-2007, 00:19
OK, using the openDNS switch outlined above (BTW, that will work as described if you are talking straight to the modem, if your via a router you need to edit your static DNS entries on there)
then it appears that someone has cocked up the DNS for the entire country. Given VM were quoted in the last week as saying they were going to be upgrading their DNS infrastructure, I guess what we have here is a failed change.

@scrotnig: If you don't want 10 MB why don't you downgrade?
Because it's part of the VIP package. if I downgraded to 4mb, which I was on before, I'd lose all the VIP discounts and pay a lot more. :(

My 4mb service used to give me 3.76mb on average. My 10mb service gives me 2.2mb on average at peak times. Fantastic! Now they've pushed it to 20mb I'm getting around 9mb!

Better still the speed never changes. I rarely download anything big and web browsing never changed between any of the speeds. It's all pointless. It's like a dash just to have the fastest speed with no thought given to whether it can be provided.

I've always been happy with ntl but the speeds are getting worse and the service less reliable as time goes on. Trouble is I happen to know how poor the ADSL alternatives are so I'm stuck.

There is room in the UK for someone to come in and *really* shake the market. All the current broadband providers are rank poor!

And as for that 0906 number to report broadband faults....if I am ever forced to call that I will refuse and simply cancel the service due to being unable to report a fault. They can just screw that.

Ah fair enough. There's not anything that really can be done. Noone's going to come along and dig up every street in the country to create their own network, so we're all reliant on BT's which is less than perfect in some areas.
There are some ISPs that provide excellent customer service but they're all ADSL, so if your line is poor there's nothing you can do which sucks.
