Since being upgraded yesterday morning in Manchester (Stockport) i've only been getting speeds between 12-15MB on my Ambit 200 NTL Branded modem (pictured above).

Should i give it a few more days to settle down or do i need a new modem? Actually on Virgin Media's website it says i don't need a new modem because it will deliver the new speed perfectly although i am beginning to wonder. What speeds are other Ambit 200 users getting?

Ambit's are total pish for 20mb dont listen to VM. According to these clowns an Ambit 100 is suitable aye right, Im getting pish poor speeds even before the 20mb's maintenance problems began

Just rebooted the modem and im seeing 2.33MB/s off giganews, to test you need to have a few ports all opening at the same time so don't trust speedtest.net.

I have the same modem as you so it will do 20mb just fine

Some experts on here are saying the Ambit 200 can't handle 20mb some are saying it can.Either it can or it can't.

The speed test on this site doesn't work for me.The speed results are always way too high.

Are you sure that's the correct picture for that modem, that looks like a 100/120?

1st 512K took 72 ms = 7111.1 KB/sec, approx 58595 Kbps, 57.22 Mbps
2nd 512K took 76 ms = 6736.8 KB/sec, approx 55511 Kbps, 54.21 Mbps
3rd 512K took 3106 ms = 164.8 KB/sec, approx 1358 Kbps, 1.33 Mbps
4th 512K took 4238 ms = 120.8 KB/sec, approx 995 Kbps, 0.97 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 29115 Kbps, 28.43 Mbps

These results appear to be rather fast - this page was possibly in the browser cache.

Liike that you mean:)
It should just be because it`s loading the thing from your browsers cache as shown at the bottom. If not then i aint sure why you`d get that.

My 120 seems to have completely died a death as of last night anyway so i`m using my sons 1Meg stb connection just now......I used to laugh though when i got that same "these results" warning when occasinally getting 16Mb out of the thing:erm:

You couldn't ask for a better connection than mine in the 3 years i've had a computer or a better place to get it (Stockport).Whatever speed i got 750k, 1mb, 2mb, 4mb and 10mb it delivered exactly that.

Now with 20mb which was upgraded in Stockport on 26th June and after doing thousands of tests the fastest it has gone is 15.945mb.It's usually between 11-14mb and a few times it breaks 15mb.I know it isn't the modem or my computer and i know VM are having problems but i'm left wondering why i haven't even reached 20mb or even 19mb even once and i can see that other people are occasionally reaching it.

Thats been roughly my own experience with our recently deceased(it seems) NTL120.I got as high as 16.??Mb a couple of times but i`d already agreed with them on the phone to leave it a month or two and see what happened so i did`nt really mind.

Of course now with no connection at all through the thing it looks as if i`ll be getting a new one on Monday after all.
One consolation is that it was quite a good experience on the phone this time(uk). We were able to do away with all the usual nonsense and get straight to the point:)

Do not rely on a speed test.....go to a news group and download a large file (1Gb), or install du meter or netmeter and do 500MB. The only way you will get your correct speed is to get the newsgroup files (as it's server speed), du and netmeter will give you the speeds (try Newsbin download of news groups...that gives you a true speed too. Internet speed test rely on too many things.

Yes they do, or else there would be loads of complaints of the Ambit 200 not working properly. You keep saying this based on your lap top and your vast knowledge of the network.

So I can download at 2.33MB/s but since the upgrade I get dropouts and packetloss on skype like crazy.

Im based in stockport manchester, should I be asking for a modem upgrade?

MK1

When i was upgraded on the 26th i was getting speeds mainly between 10-15MB with a highest of 15.945MB so i thought to myself i'll give it 5 days to settle down and give VM time to sort out any problems. Now it's 5 days later, July 1st, and it's getting worse.I'm crawling around at just over 3MB.

In all that time i'm yet to even break the 16MB barrier nevermind 20MB.The Keystone Cops could have done a better job of this than VM.

MK1
11-09-2007, 10:57
Finally i've broke the 16mb barrier getting a high so far of 16 323kbps. Still way short of 20 480kbps but things seem to be getting better since the roll out completion.

Hey guys, this link here...

http://www.virginmedia.com/customers/servicestatus/ambit.php

VM advises that all 100, 120 and 200 modems require replacement. In ex NTL regions you will probably land the new Virgin branded Ambit 255 and in ex Telewest areas you should receive a 2100DPC Scientific Atlanta.

The online form was removed from the VM website but this has been reported and hopefully it will return soon! If you need a replacement modem then call customer care to arrange free delivery of your modem swap!

Hope this helps!

Ambit 100, 120 and 200 cable modems - more information

http://www.virginmedia.com/images/modem-issues2-90x68.jpg
After further investigations we have now concluded that there may be circumstances where Ambit 100 and Ambit 120 modems do not meet the performance criteria for the Broadband Size XL service.

We recommend that any customers who have either of these modems now request a cable modem swap-out (http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/existingcustomers/faster/current_service.html) in order to get the maximum performance from their broadband connection.

The Ambit 200 modems meet the specified performance criteria.

My new Virgin 255 modem is now installed and working after months of trying to get one over the phone and the first speed test on this site was 17.84Mb then others of 18,19,20 and even 21.13Mb. My best on an Ambit 200 was 16Mb.

Jefferson T a member of The Cable Forum Team posted last month in another thread

"My 200 refused to work at 20, only 16. Virgin changed it for a 255"

So anyone with an Ambit 200 who can't go faster than 16Mb make sure you get the latest Virgin 255 modem so you can get 20Mb which is what you're paying for.

The 250 and 200 are essentially the same, except the 255 is VM branded, and doesn't have a USB connection.

People with the 250 modem won't automatically get it replaced with the 255, as both support 20Mbps.

Surely this should read "The 250 [blue/ NTL] and 255 [black/VM] are essentially the same, except the 255 is VM branded, and doesn't have a USB connection."?
Isn't this thread about the capabilities of the NTL 200 (silver)?

Well your most likely was faulty, that's the reason you weren't getting the speeds. If you look at my last post it states the problem modems and the ones that are compatable with 20Mb service.

The Ambit 100 and 120 won't support 20Mb and the 250 and 255 do support it whilst in the middle is the 200 which works for some people but not for others. I remember reading it on another thread recently. The max it will go for some people is only 16Mb therefore they need to get a new modem to get 20 Mb. Virgin Media should update their site with this information.

Post the source then of this info, as the info i have given is from the VM site. The 200 will support it, you can't base your theory on a few people having issues with there BB service.

Virgin Media are slow to update their site with new info. When my area was upgraded to 20Mb earlier this year no matter what i did from then until a few days ago i could never make my Ambit 200 go faster than 16Mb. Then the other month or 2 ago on this forum i read that they did more tests and some Ambit 200's will not go faster than 16Mb. Then last month a member of The Cable Forum Team said his Ambit would not go faster than 16Mb so Virgin Media swapped it for a 255. It all makes sense. There was nothing wrong with my set up apart from an Ambit 200 that would only do 16Mb.

You maybe right that some don't, but does this apply to all 200 modems? if it's just a certain batch there not going to say all 200 modems are incompatible, they will probably not say anything,(just a guess) and just let a slow trickle of these modems be changed as and when people call in saying they can't get the service with a 200?

This is through my Ambit 200. So at least some can do it.
