Hi there, I'm new to this forum and have a question about the new 20mb broadband sevice. I know the answer is probably here somewhere but I have not found it yet. When I was on the 10mb service the best speeds I ever saw was 5.1 mb. I am in the Basildon area and have been upgraded to 20 mb and the best speed I've seen so far is 5.2 mb. I've been using Speedtest.net to check the speeds. My upload speed has doubled since the upgrade. Is there something that I need to do at my end to get these new speeds?

Thanks in advance.

Assuming it's not just network congestion it sounds like you might need a new modem, check out http://allyours.virginmedia.com/cgi-bin/formactions/uplift_customer.pl

I am in Dartford, kent. I was on 10 then upgraded to 20mb a month or so ago. My connection has kept dropping over the last 2 weeks at night and the weekends when I could not get any connection at all. All I could get in the day was up to 4mb in the morning about 2mb them 0 at night. Then this morning I was told by an engineer that came around my house that the reason for this was that the 20mb service was the problem and they did not know when they would get it fixed. So now I have dropped to 4mb just to get a connection at peak times. I will keep this until or if Virgin ever get it fixed. Nice no one told about this till now after all the calls i have made to report the problem.

are you connecting direct from the modem to the Pc via ethernet?

Thanks for the replies. I've just been playing around with it for a while and I disconnected my router and ran an ethernet cable from the modem straight into the computer and my speed went straight up to 11mb! I also spoke to the tech team at virgin media and they say my modem is fine. They don't support any wireless modems so can't give me any support with that. I tried ringing Belkin but the number must have changed.

I have a mixed network here, on the pc's connected directly to the router I get around the full 20 meg, I also have a dumb hub which splits the connection between my Nas & a media centre pc, I only get 11meg maximum through that leg, I also have a wireless access point which gives my laptop a maximum of 5.5 meg (from less than 4 feet away), but when I connect the laptop direct to the hub I get 11 meg, and when connected to the router around the full 20 meg.

So I know that the speed issues are due to my network set up, I have never seen wireless give the full speed, but then I don't have all the latest gear.

I've got one pc and 2 laptops all wireless conected and all get a max speed of 5.2 meg. Like I said in my last post, I switched of the router and connected directly to the modem and my speed doubled. I will have to connect one of the laptops to the router with a lead and see what speed I get that way.

---------- Post added at 14:59 ---------- Previous post was at 13:16 ----------

Well here's what I've found out so far:
PC and 2 laptops all conected by wireless, Max speed 5.2 meg (consistently)
PC or laptop connected Directly to cable modem (Router switched off), Max speed 13 meg
PC or laptop connected to router via ethernet lead, max speed 8-9 meg.

Is this normal for a router or is there something wrong with it.

Might sound a bit silly, but are your laptops and router 801.11b or 801.11g or both?

Check your Belkin router, for some reason only Belkin can answer they supply routers with 10/100 lan ports, but the wan port that the modem uses to connect to the router is only a 10 base

Try using a program called Dr TCP which is downloadable from the web.
With the correct settings your wireless speed settings should improve greatly.

For the last two nights I cannot get more that about 0.5Mb on a 10Mb connection. In frustration I'm investigating the most appropriate regulator to wipe Virgin out - this is not good enough for me or my neighbours in the St James's Street area of Walthamstow, North East London.

What makes you say that?

It says
"Virgin media customers on the Broadband XL (20Meg) service might be experiencing slow speeds when downloading files. This issue is not affecting customers that have Scientific Atlanta or Motorola Cable modems. Our engineers are aware of this issue and will endeavour to resolve this as soon as possible. Virgin Media would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused. "

I am ex-NTL, and I have a NTL250, which is made by Ambit.

HI,

I am also on XL Broadband ex NTL with the NTL 250 modem. My modem is still configured for 10Mb (not yet been upgraded).

I too am only gettin 0.5Mb connections - although earlier I did manage to get it up to 1.3Mb - now there is value for money.

Hopefuly it will be sorted soon.
